Blazers Claim Maloney Series Trophy with Win at Mississippi College

Box Score
Clinton, MS-The Belhaven baseball team claimed the 2010 Maloney Series Trophy on the strength of a 13-10 victory at Mississippi College Tuesday night. Craig Dean hit a two out three run homer in the top of the ninth leading the Blazers to the win over the 11th ranked Choctaws. Belhaven took two out of three games from the Choctaws this year and are now 4-1 in Maloney Series play with one more game to go against Millsaps. However, neither Mississippi College nor Millsaps can catch the Blazers in the standings.

Belhaven (28-10), ranked 15th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, pulled ahead early with two runs in the top of the first frame. A couple of walks by Mississippi College starting pitcher Craig Mackay opened the door for a two run single by Brandon Benton to give the Blazers a 2-0 edge. The Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the first when Brannon Walls induced a bases loaded walk from Chris Bennett closing the gap to 2-1 after an inning of play.

Belhaven got the run back in the top of the second when Shawn Diehl hit the first of his two triples in the game and came in on a single by Drew Dillard extending the advantage to 3-1.However, Mississippi College (24-5) knotted the score at 3-3 on an RBI double by Chase Herrin and an RBI groundout to second off the bat of Bo Bell in the second.

The Blazers grabbed the lead back on Lake Eiland's fourth home run of the year to open the third inning and then appeared to take control of the game with five more runs in the fourth. Diehl recorded an RBI double, Dillard drove in a run on a base hit up the middle, Jimmy Gilford delivered a run scoring single to center, Timmy Foster cashed in Gilford on a sac fly to right field, and Eiland advanced home on an error by Walls in right to account for the five runs. When the dust had settled, Belhaven found themselves with a 9-3 edge.

Unfortunately, Golden Grasse struggled in relief and the Choctaws rallied for four runs in their half of the fourth to get right back into the contest. Shane Bennett, Walls, Stuart Magee, and Jarrod Cannette all had run scoring hits for Mississippi College in the inning. Belhaven fought back for a run in the fifth when Dean singled with two outs and crossed the plate on another triple by Diehl to make it 10-7 Blazers. Mississippi College evened things up again on a sacrifice fly by Magee in the fifth and a two out two run double by Bodree in the sixth made it a new ballgame at 10-10.

The game remained 10-10 until the ninth as Brandt Hinton and Wade Broyles were able to slow down the Choctaw offense out of the bullpen. The Belhaven ninth began with a single by Foster followed by a sac bunt by Benton that moved Foster to second base. Pitcher Brock Campbell then got Derek Tortorich on a ground out to shortstop for the second out in the inning. Paul Moreno pinch hit for John Michael Williamson and was intentionally walked bringing Dean to the plate. Dean is Belhaven's best hitter and at that point in the game was 1 for 4 at the plate. That decision proved to be costly as Dean hammered his seventh home run of the season over the wall just to the right of center field. Leading 13-10, Broyles came back out to pitch the ninth and struck out the side to preserve the Blazer victory.

Broyles was credited with his third win of the season and is now 3-0 after having pitched the final two innings of the night. Broyles did not allow a run or a hit while striking out six Choctaw batters. Campbell was saddled with the loss for Mississippi College as he fired 1.1 innings giving up the final three runs of the game on two hits. The loss drops Campbell's record to 2-1 in 2010.

Dean had two hits and three runs batted in to pace the Belhaven offense while Dillard and Diehl led the hit parade with three hits and 2 RBI's apiece. Gilford, Eiland, and Foster all had two hits each and an RBI while Benton collected one hit and two runs batted in. As a team, Belhaven scored their 13 runs on 16 hits while playing error free baseball.

Walls, Magee, and Bodree all had 2 RBI's for Mississippi College followed by Cannette, Herrin, and Bennett with one run batted in apiece. Andy Smith and Chris Glaze led the Choctaws in total hits with two each. As a team, Mississippi College had 11 hits in the game and committed one error.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday night when they open a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Series at Spring Hill College. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 PM and all the live play-by-play action can be heard via Stretch internet through the Belhaven Athletics website beginning with the pregame show at 5:45 PM.
