Blazers Complete Sweep of Tougaloo

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team locked up a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series sweep against Tougaloo College on Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers won game one of the doubleheader 11-0 in five innings and took the night cap 19-0 in seven innings. Belhaven outscored the Bulldogs 43-1 in the series as the bats came to life and the pitching staff silenced the Tougaloo bats.

Game One
Belhaven (34-11, 22-6 GCAC) was held scoreless until the third inning when the Blazers exploded for five runs after two men were out. Kyle Feazell hit a comebacker to the mound and Craig Dean struck out swinging to open the frame. However, Shawn Diehl kept the inning alive with a double down the right field line and then Drew Dillard followed with an RBI single to drive Diehl in for the game's first run. Jimmy Gilford reached on a base hit and both he and Dillard were chased home on a two run double by Timmy Foster. Brandon Benton capped the third inning with a two run single to left center making it a 5-0 lead.

The two out magic continued in the fourth inning when the Blazers scored six more times after two batters were retired. Dillard connected on a two run homer to left field, his fourth of the season, pushing the lead to 7-0. Later in the inning, Foster picked up another run batted in on a base hit to left and Benton launched his third home run of the season bringing in three more runs to extend the advantage to 11-0. Ryan Kassab started and pitched the first four innings before giving way to Paul Hoffman in the fifth who closed the door on the Bulldogs putting the 10 run rule into effect.

Kassab earned the win as he gave up just one hit and one strikeout, but more importantly did not allow a walk. Kassab improved his record on the mound to 6-1 this season. Benton led the offense in game one going two for three at the plate with five runs batted in. Foster and Dillard each had two hits and 3 RBI's and Gilford ended the game with two hits and two runs scored. As a team, Belhaven pounded out 11 hits against Tougaloo (2-42, 1-25 GCAC) pitcher William Lowe who allowed all 11 runs with two walks and three strikeouts. William Walker had the only hit of the game for the Bulldogs.

Game Two
Belhaven did not waste any time getting on the board in the second game of the day scoring eight times in the bottom of the first. The Blazers had four hits and Tougaloo committed four costly errors leading to the big inning. Foster put the Blazers in front with an RBI on a fielder's choice, Benton doubled home a run, Paul Moreno had an RBI on a ground out to second base, and Derek Tortorich doubled to left center to pick up an RBI. Courtesy runner Mark Gray crossed the plate on one of the Bulldog errors, Gilford lifted a two run double to left center, and Dillard scored the eighth run on another error.

Belhaven picked up two runs in the third on RBI doubles by Tortorich and Diehl to make it a 10-0 contest. Five more runs were chalked up in the fourth on an RBI single by Benton, a wild pitch opened the door for Foster to come home, an RBI ground out by Tortorich followed by an RBI triple off the bat of Dean. Dean ended up scoring the fifth run of the inning on passed ball by the catcher Michael Spann. The final four runs for Belhaven were put up in the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Kiel Higginbotham who then scored on a throwing error. Alex Riser had a sacrifice fly to right field and John Michael Williamson doubled in the final run on a shot to left center extending the lead to 19-0.

Paul Faulkenberry pitched the first four innings and recorded the victory to go to 6-1 in 2010 Faulkenberry did not allow a run or a hit and struck out one. Wade Broyles tossed the final three innings and was credited with a save surrendering one hit, with one walk and seven strikeouts. Broyles is second in the NAIA when it comes to saves with nine so far this season. The Belhaven single season record for most saves was set by Kyle Medley with 13 a year ago.

Tortorich had three runs batted in for Belhaven on two hits followed by Benton and Gilford with 2 RBI's each. Benton had a combined seven runs batted in on Saturday afternoon. Dean picked up two more hits and increased his batting average to .456 and with Foster's RBI's he now has 54 on the year. As a team, Belhaven had 14 hits in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Ricky McCrary took the loss for Tougaloo pitching the first 3.1 innings with 15 runs on 10 hits allowed. Only six of the runs were earned as McCrary falls to 0-6 on the season. Michael Langston was charged with the other four runs in 2.2 innings of relief work. Derrick Singleton had the only hit in the game for the Bulldogs.

Belhaven will return to action at Smith-Wills Stadium on Tuesday night as they host NCAA Division II Delta State University beginning at 6:00 PM. All the play-by-play action can be heard via Stretch Internet through the Belhaven athletics website starting with the pregame show at 5:45 PM.
