Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team opened up a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series on Friday night at Smith-Wills Stadium with a 13-1 victory over Tougaloo College.
Brandt Hinton continued his outstanding 2010 campaign with another solid performance on the mound en route to a 9-0 record this season. Hinton allowed only one run on four hits in six innings of work. The Blazers offense came to life in the fifth inning posting seven runs to put the game away.
Belhaven (32-11, 20-6 GCAC) plated their first three runs of the night in the bottom of the first inning with two of them coming in on a triple to right field by
Lake Eiland.
Timmy Foster followed with an RBI ground out to second base giving Belhaven the early 3-0 edge against Tougaloo starter Matthew Scott. The Blazers made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by
Jimmy Gilford to right field.
In the fifth, Foster led off with a triple to right center followed by a walk to
Brandon Benton, and then
Paul Moreno was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Derek Tortorich proceeded to drive a ball just inside the third base bag and down the left field line clearing the bases and extending the Belhaven lead to 7-0. Later in the inning,

Mark Gray on a sac fly and base hit by
Drew Dillard chased home
Craig Dean. The final two runs of the frame came in on a fielding error by third baseman Derrick Singleton on a ground ball off the bat of Benton.
Tougaloo (2-40, 1-23 GCAC) got their only run of the night in the sixth inning when Anthony Triplett doubled to left field and crossed the plate on a triple down the right field line by Myron Gilmore. On one of the best defensive plays of the night, Dillard threw out Gilmore at home plate after catching William Lowes fly ball to keep the Bulldogs from scoring any more runs. Belhaven went on to add a pair of runs in the sixth on a pinch hit RBI double by
John Michael Williamson and a sacrifice fly by Dillard.
Graham Upshaw came in to pitch a scoreless seventh inning and lock down the 13-1 win.
Dillard had a 4 for 4 night at the plate with 2 RBI's and two runs scored to pace the Belhaven offense. Tortorich had three runs batted in while Eiland had a triple and two runs batted in. Gilford, Foster, Williamson, and Diehl all had one RBI apiece.
Matthew Scott took the loss for the Bulldogs working five innings allowing all 13 Belhaven runs on 12 hits. Scott issued five walks and struck out three before giving way to Michael Langston in the sixth inning. Henry Green,
Shayne Odum, Gilmore, and Triplett had the only hits for the Bulldogs with Gilmore driving in the only run of the night.
Belhaven will wrap up their three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Series with Tougaloo at Smith-Wills Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
