Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team wrapped up the 2010 Maloney Series schedule with a 12-0 victory over Millsaps College on Thursday night at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers won the Maloney Series trophy last week with a win at Mississippi College and finished with a 5-1 record in Maloney Series games which includes Thursday's triumph over the Majors.
Chris Bennett had a strong outing for Belhaven on the mound pitching all seven innings with only three hits allowed and
Timmy Foster blasted a pair of home runs to help secure the win.
Things started out a little rocky for Bennett in the first frame as Millsaps looked to have the makings of a big inning. Bennett struck out Josh Ordeneaux to open the night, but gave up back to back base hits to Jules Roussel and Will Hawkins followed by a walk to Tyler Berry loading up the bases. However, in what was arguably the turning point in the game despite it being in the early innings, Bennett got a comebacker to the mound off the bat of Jake Mills and started a 1-2-3 double play to get the Blazers out of the jam and end the inning.
Millsaps (24-12) pitcher Ryan Zemke was effective through the first three innings, but ran into some major trouble in the fourth. Belhaven (31-11) proceeded to take control of the game with eight runs on six hits while being aided by three Millsaps errors. The inning began with a single by Lake Eland and then Foster cleared the wall in center field for his sixth home run of the season to make it 2-0 Blazers.
Brandon Benton then went back to back with Foster as he drove a Zemke pitch over the wall in right to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Paul Moreno, who reached base on a single to left field, came home on a throwing error by shortstop Drew Leonard.
Shawn Diehl then picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice,
Jimmy Gilford singled home Diehl, and Foster capped the inning off with a two run single to right field giving Belhaven a commanding 8-0 lead.
The Blazers tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a single by Diehl and an RBI groundout by Gilford. Leading 10-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Foster notched his fifth RBI of night on his second home run of the game that sailed over the wall in left center field. It was Foster's seventh home run of the season and second multi home run game of 2010 with the first coming at Delta State on March 30th. The other run in the sixth was the result of a base hit by Moreno to right field pushing the Blazer lead to 12-0. Bennett came out and closed the door on Millsaps in the top of the seventh to put the 10 run rule into effect a wrap up the seven inning victory.
Bennett had a season high 10 strikeouts and walked only two as he improves to 3-3 on the season with the victory. Foster was 3 for 5 at the dish with 5 RBI's including the two home runs. Benton, Moreno, and
Craig Dean all had a pair of hits while Moreno and Benton each had an RBI. Gilford and Diehl had one hit apiece and two runs batted in. Dean's two doubles on Thursday night boosted is batting average to .451and Foster's 5 RBI's now gives him 49 in 2010. As a team, the Blazers pounded out 13 hits with six of them going for extra bases.
Zemke (0-1) suffered the loss for Millsaps as he went the first 3.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout. Jules Roussel, Will Hawkins, and Wes Perkins had the only hits for Millsaps.
