Blazers Bounce Back with Win over Union

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team snapped a three game losing streak on Wednesday night with an impressive 8-2 victory over 19th ranked Union University (TN) at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers, ranked 16th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, got another outstanding performance from Brandt Hinton who pitched seven shutout innings for his seventh win of the season to get Belhaven back on track.

Belhaven (27-10) got to Union starting pitcher Brad Davis in the third inning posting four runs on seven hits. Drew Dillard tripled home Craig Dean who started the inning off with an infield single. Lake Eiland followed with an RBI single to left followed by another single off the bat of Timmy Foster. Brandon Benton cashed in Eiland on double to left center for the third run of the inning and John Michael Williamson capped the frame off on an RBI single to right center to make it 4-0 Blazers.

Belhaven tacked on two more runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Dillard and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eiland. Leading 6-0, Belhaven pushed the edge to 7-0 on a sac fly by Dillard in the sixth and then Foster led off the seventh frame by launching his fifth home run of the season over the left center field fence. The blast by Foster was his third home run in the last two games and with his RBI tonight has a team high 43 in 2010.

Wade Broyles came in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings allowing both of Union's runs. With two outs in the eighth, Corey Rudolph belted a two run homer over the left field wall to make it an 8-2 game. Broyles then settled down in the ninth inning and kept the Bulldogs off the board to preserve the victory.

The win by Hinton on the mound runs his record to 7-0 as he scattered five hits, recorded three strikeouts, and did not allow a run in his seven innings of work. Dillard paced the Blazers at the plate with a 2 for 3 night driving in three runs while scoring another. Eiland had a hit and two runs batted in while Foster produced three hits in four at bats with one run batted in. Dean also notched three hits and crossed the plate three times boosting his season batting average to .431. Benton and Williamson collected the other Belhaven RBI's in the game. As a team, the Blazers pounded out 14 hits including four for extra bases.

Davis took the loss for the Bulldogs as he drops to 0-2 on the season after allowing four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings on the mound. Rudolph went 3 for 4 at the plate with a home run and two runs batted in to lead the Union (22-6) offense. The Blazer pitching staff held Union to seven hits on the night and the Bulldogs ended up stranding eight base runners.

Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Mississippi College for a Maloney Series contest with the Choctaws. The Blazers are 1-1 against Mississippi College in 2010 winning 4-3 on February 10th while losing 3-2 on March 9th. Belhaven leads the Maloney Series standings at 3-1 followed by Mississippi College at 2-2 and Millsaps at 1-3.
