Blazers Sink Millsaps

Box Score
Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team notched their third Maloney Series victory of the season on Tuesday night with a 14-7 win at Millsaps College. It was the Blazers second triumph over the Majors this season with the first coming on February 23rd in an 11-2 decision at Smith-Wills Stadium. Belhaven racked up 13 hits and blasted three home runs in the contest en route to their fifth straight win and a 3-1 mark in the Maloney Series contests.

Belhaven (25-6) jumped on Millsaps' starting pitcher Blake Boleware for three runs in the top of the first inning. Drew Dillard opened the game with a home run to right center field followed by a double by Lake Eiland and a run scoring single by Jimmy Gilford. With one out in the first, Zack Snider came in to replace Boleware and gave up a sacrifice fly to Kyle Feazell that plated Timmy Foster from third base to make it a 3-0 Blazer lead.

Millsaps (16-7) defense faltered in the top of the second inning leading to another Belhaven run. Throwing errors by catcher Tyler Berry and third baseman Will Hawkins gave the Blazers extra outs and kept the door open for Foster's two out run scoring single to left that chased home Dillard to extend the advantage to 4-0.

The Majors got on the board in the bottom of the second thanks to a two run home run by Berry off Belhaven starting pitcher Chris Bennett. In the bottom of the third, Millsaps trimmed the Blazer lead to one at 4-3 when Jeremey Aliff walked, stole second, and then came home on a throwing error by Feazell from behind home plate.

Belhaven answered with two runs in the top of the fourth with the help of just one hit. The Majors committed two more errors in the inning. Dillard reached base on a misplayed groundball by Hawkins at third base and a throwing error by shortstop Drew Leonard on a potential inning ending double play permitted Dillard and Diehl to cross home plate. Foster hit the ground ball and was credited with an RBI on a fielder's choice because a double play cannot be assumed.

The turning point in the game took place in the top of the sixth inning when the Blazers exploded for five runs to take control of the contest. Eiland and Gilford drew walks against relief pitcher Andrew Pearce which were followed by an RBI double off the bat of Foster that sent home Eiland. Brandon Benton then cleared the bases with his first home run of the season on a three run shot over the wall in left field to make it a 10-3 game. The bases did not stay empty for long as Paul Moreno dropped a single into center field and Feazell promptly cashed him in with a double down the left field line.

Leading 11-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Majors got a two run homer from Will Perkins cutting the Blazers lead to 11-5. Belhaven responded with their third home run of the night in the top of the eighth as Craig Dean lifted his sixth long ball of the year down the right field line. The three run blast plated Benton and Feazell who both walked ahead of Dean in the inning. Millsaps tacked on a couple of runs in the ninth inning against Paul Hoffman on a two run double by Ryan Zemke, but it was too little too late as Belhaven came out with a 14-7 win.

Bennett earned the win for Belhaven as he went the first six innings allowing three runs on just two hits. Only two of the runs were earned and Bennett struck out seven Millsaps batters in the game. Dean, Foster, and Benton led the Belhaven offense with thee RBI's apiece while Dean, Diehl, Foster, and Dillard each collected two hits each. Foster and Dean now have a team high 35 runs batted in on the season. As a team, six of the Blazers 13 hits went for extra bases.

Boleware suffered the loss for Millsaps with three runs allowed in a third of an inning. Boleware allowed the runs on three hits while walking two before leaving the game with what looked to be a possible injury. Berry was 2 for 2 at the plate with 2 RBI's for Millsaps while Zemke and Perkins each collected two runs batted in.

Belhaven will take the field again on Friday afternoon when they return home to Smith-Wills Stadium to open a four game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Series against LSU-Shreveport. The first pitch of Friday's doubleheader is slated for 4:00 PM and all the live play-by-play action can be heard via Stretch internet through the Belhaven Athletics website beginning with the pregame show at 3:45 PM.
