Mobile, AL-The Belhaven baseball team wrapped up a four game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series sweep on Saturday afternoon by taking both games of a doubleheader at the University of Mobile. Belhaven took game one on Saturday by a final of 9-4 followed by an 11-6 triumph in the day's second contest. The Blazers also swept the season series 6-0 with the Rams having won a pair of games against Mobile at Smith-Wills Stadium on January 30th.
Game One
Mobile had the momentum early on in the first game of the day scoring a run in each of the first two innings to build a 2-0 lead. Travis Williamson lifted a sacrifice fly into left field plating the first run and Justin Beck drove home the games second run with an RBI single in the second inning.
Belhaven got the bats going in the top of the third and grabbed the lead with four runs in the frame.
Jimmy Gilford brought in the first run on a base hit to left and then
Timmy Foster followed with an RBI double to right field.
Brandon Benton delivered the big hit in the inning by blasting a double down the left field line that chased home Foster and pinch runner
Justin Hill giving the Blazers a 4-2 edge.
Belhaven went on to score single runs in each of the next three innings to extend their advantage to 7-2.
Craig Dean launched his fifth home run of the season in the fourth and not to be outdone
Timmy Foster went deep for the second time this season in the fifth inning.
Lake Eiland produced run number seven in the sixth inning on a base hit to center field that cashed in courtesy runner
Mark Gray.
The Rams came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a home run by Dustin Lee and an RBI double by Derek Bourgeois off Belhaven starter
Ryan Kassab. However, the Blazers added two more runs in the top of the seventh to push the lead out to 9-4.
John Michael Williamson had a pinch hit RBI single and the Blazers were aided on an error by third baseman Cameron White who misplayed a ground ball off the bat of
Craig Dean.
Paul Moreno, who had come back into the game to pinch run for Williamson, crossed the plate on the play.
Andy Kuehn came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh for Belhaven and closed out the game with a one, two, three inning to secure the victory.
Kassab ran his record to 5-0 on the season after pitching the first six innings allowing four runs on 10 hits. On offense, Belhaven had 13 hits and
Lake Eiland along with
Timmy Foster led the way with three hits apiece. Foster and Benton paced the team in RBI's with two each while Williamson, Dean, Gilford, and Eiland each had one run batted in. The Blazers had six extra base hits including the home runs by Foster and Dean.
Chris Peacock pitched all seven innings for Mobile and took the loss surrendering all nine runs on the 13 hits. Beck, Williamson, Lee, and Bourgeois each had an RBI to lead the Ram offense.
Game Two
Both teams went toe to toe in the early stages of the second game as the score was deadlocked through the first three innings.
Shawn Diehl had an RBI double to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Mobile answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning without the aid of a hit. Cody Barber picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1. Belhaven gave the Rams two extra outs on a pair of errors by Diehl.
The Blazers pulled back ahead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Foster which sent home Eiland from third who had began the inning with a base hit. However, the Rams came right back in the bottom of the frame as Bourgeois walked, stole second, went to third on a sac bunt, and crossed the plate on a balk by pitcher
Alan McHenry.
With the score tied at 2-2, Moreno put Belhaven in the lead for good when he belted his third home run of the season over the right field wall in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-2 game. The Blazers added two runs in the fifth when Foster drew a walk with the bases loaded followed by a double play ground ball off the bat of Benton that scored Eiland from third base.
Mobile did not go away answering with two runs in sixth inning on a two run single by Beck to trim the Belhaven edge to 5-4. The Blazers responded quickly scoring four more times in the top of the seventh inning. Foster had an RBI double followed by a run scoring single off the bat of Moreno. Dean delivered the big hit in the inning with a two run double down the left field line that chased in Moreno and
Justin Hill.
Leading 9-4 going into the bottom of the eighth, Belhaven's defense faltered again on an error by Dillard in left that helped lead to another pair of Ram runs.
Golden Grasse started the inning, but with the bases loaded and one out gave way to closer
Wade Broyles who shutdown Mobile limiting them to just the two runs. Belhaven chalked up two more insurance runs in the ninth on a sac fly by pinch hitter
Kyle Feazell and a run scoring pinch hit single by
Kiel Higginbotham. Broyles shut the door on Mobile in the ninth and picked up his eighth save after having come into the game with the tying run on deck in the eighth inning.
Alan McHenry got the start on the mound and was credited with his fifth win of 2010 to go to 5-1. McHenry tossed the first five innings and surrendered two runs on one hit with three strikeouts. Broyles went 1.2 innings for the save and has allowed only one run this season lowering his ERA to 0.55. Eiland, Moreno, and Dean each had three hits while Foster had two hits and three runs batted in. Moreno and Dean both posted two RBI's followed by Diehl, Feazell, and Higginbotham with one run batted in apiece.
Jarrin Brister was tagged with the loss for Mobile as he pitched the first four innings and was charged with five runs. John Ladnier gave up four runs and Jeff Lyons was responsible for the other two Blazer runs in the contest. Bourgeois and Sanderson led Mobile in hits with two each.
Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Millsaps College for a Maloney Series matchup against the Majors. Belhaven won the first meeting of the season 11-2 on February 23rd at Smith-Wills Stadium.
