Blazers Snap Two Game Skid, Take First Two Games at Mobile

Mobile, AL-The Belhaven baseball team ended a short two game losing streak on Friday afternoon by taking the first two games of a four game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series at the University of Mobile. The Blazers took game one of the day 3-0 and followed that up with a 16-6 run rule victory over the Rams in the second game of the afternoon. The first of Friday's contests was a makeup game that was originally scheduled to be the season opener at Smith-Wills Stadium on January 29th, but was postponed due to rain.

Game One
Belhaven (22-6, 14-2 GCAC) was the home team in the scorebook in game one and put their first run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Benton had an at bat kept alive on a dropped foul ball by first baseman Brad Sheffield and Benton made Mobile pay. Benton drilled a double to left center field and came home on a single by Kyle Feazell to make it 1-0 Blazers. Belhaven added another run in the third when Shawn Diehl led off with a single, went to second on a stolen base, and moved to third on another error by Sheffield. Drew Dillard cashed in Diehl on a sacrifice fly to right extending the advantage to 2-0.

Belhaven posted an insurance run in the sixth on the second another sacrifice fly. Dillard tripled to open the inning and Jimmy Gilford followed with the sac fly to right field. Wade Broyles, who had come on to relieve starting pitcher Paul Faulkenberry with two outs in the sixth, shut the door on Mobile (10-18, 4-12 GCAC) to close out the 3-0 Blazer victory.

Diehl, Benton, Feazell, and Dillard had the only hits for Belhaven as Dillard, Gilford, and Feazell tallied the only RBI's. Faulkenberry pitched the first 5.2 innings and shutout the Rams on five hits. Faulkenberry walked two and out five for the win which runs his record to 4-0 on the season. Broyles fired 1.1 innings and had two strikeouts to notch his seventh save of 2010.

Justin Beck had two hits to lead Mobile and Michael Clay suffered the loss on the mound allowing three runs on four hits in six innings of work. Only one of the runs that Clay gave up ended up being earned.

Game Two
The second game of the day proved to be a slugfest and Belhaven delivered the first blow in the top of the first inning with five runs on four hits. Timmy Foster drove a two run triple to right center, Benton brought home Foster with a single to center field and came in on Paul Moreno's second home run of the season.

In the third, the Blazers produced their biggest inning of the contest scoring eight times on seven hits. Benton got the inning going with an RBI base hit followed by a Craig Dean sacrifice fly to right field. Diehl then shot a base hit to right field chasing home Benton. Dillard continued the hit parade with an RBI single to center field and with the bases loaded Gilford drew a walk to cash in another run. Dillard eventually scored on a wild pitch and Foster brought in two more runs thanks to a double down the right field line that capped the inning and put Belhaven up 13-0.

Mobile tried to get back in the game with fours run in the bottom of the third inning. The Blazers struggled on defense committing three errors which resulted in all four runs being unearned against pitcher Brandt Hinton. Leading 13-4, the Blazers tacked on three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs in the frame, shortstop Derek Bourgeois misplayed a ball off the bat of Moreno that kept the inning alive. Foster scored on the play and Dean came to the plate two batters later and promptly lined a two run single to center field to make it 16-4 Belhaven. The Rams came back with two runs in the sixth, but were shutdown in the seventh to put the 10 run rule into effect.

Foster had a big game for the Blazers going 4 for 4 at the plate with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Benton was also 4 for 4 with 2 RBI's while Gilford had a pair of hits and two runs batted in. Dean had a hit and 3 RBI's while Moreno collected two RBI's with his home run in the first inning.

Brandt Hinton went the first six innings and got the win to go to 6-0 on the season. Hinton surrendered six runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits. Joe Diecidue made his first appearance of the season and pitched a scoreless seventh with three strikeouts.

Cameron White and Sheffield had two hits each for Mobile while Beck, Sheffield, and Bourgeois had the only runs batted in. Alan Butts was tagged with the loss as Belhaven roughed him up for 11 runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings.

Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday when they wrap up the four game series at Mobile with another doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 PM.
