Jackson, TN-The Belhaven baseball team lost an 11 inning marathon at Union University Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 4-3 in the first extra inning game of the season for the Blazers. Belhaven had some chances to put more runs on the board, but couldn't come up with some key hits leaving eight men stranded on the bases for the game.
Belhaven (20-5) got off to a good start jumping on top with a run in the top of the first inning.
Jimmy Gilford, who had not played in the last few games due to injury, was in the lineup as the DH and blasted his third home run of the season over the right field wall. The Blazers made it a 2-0 game in the second when
Craig Dean singled home
Brandon Benton who had started the inning off with a single to right field. Unfortunately, the advantage didn't last long as Union (17-3) came back to tie the game in the bottom of the second on a two run single by David Maristany to make it 2-2.
Belhaven moved back in front in the fourth when
Shawn Diehl dropped down a bunt single on a called squeeze play that chased home
Paul Moreno from third base. Moreno had been hit by a pitch to open the frame and eventually made to third base after
Kyle Feazell walked and Andrew Haley uncorked a wild pitch.
Leading 3-2, the Blazers watched as the Bulldogs answered in the fourth to deadlock the game once again at 3-3. The inning stayed alive after two men were out on an error by shortstop
Shawn Diehl and a passed by on Feazell opened the door for Maristany to score on the play. Neither team would score again until the bottom of the 11th inning when Union ended the contest on an RBI base hit by Beau Baker which gave Union the 4-3 victory.
Chris Bennett pitched well once again for Belhaven as he went the first six innings allowing just three runs on four hits. Only two of the runs were earned and Bennett ended the game with three strikeouts.
Golden Grasse fired the last 4.1 innings and suffered the loss by surrendering the winning run in the 11th inning. Grasse gave up seven hits and walked four to fall to 1-1 in 2010.
Offensively, Dean led the Blazers going 2 for 5 afternoon at the plate with one RBI and now has a team high 26 RBI's this season. Gilford was one for two at the dish with a RBI thanks to his home run in the first inning. Diehl had the other Belhaven RBI on Tuesday afternoon.
Andrew Haley pitched the first six innings for Union and gave up all three of the Blazers runs. Jared Davis (3-0) was the winner in relief for the Bulldogs tossing the final five innings and gave up just two hits while striking out five Blazer batters. Maristany had a solid game at the plate for Union going 2 for 4 with two runs batted in.
