Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team rebounded from their loss on Tuesday night to Mississippi College with a 7-0 shutout victory over Iowa Wesleyan College Thursday night at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers offense got back on track pounding out 13 hits while the Belhaven pitching staff limited the Tigers to just three hits in the contest.
Belhaven (17-4) got to Iowa Wesleyan (4-5) early with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Blazers started the frame off with three straight hits beginning with
Timmy Foster's double down the left field line to lead things off.
Brandon Benton followed with a single to shallow right field and then
Paul Moreno drove in the game's first run with a double down the right field line.
Kyle Feazell made it 2-0 on an RBI groundout and
Craig Dean finished the inning off with an RBI single to center.
Belhaven posted another run in the third when
Jordan Brewer reached base when Nelcicio York dropped a fly ball in right field. Foster made the Tigers pay as he doubled to right center chasing home Brewer to extend the lead to 4-0. Meanwhile, Blazer starting pitcher
Chris Bennett was dominating on the mound and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning of the game. Jay Olson's single to right field broke up what had been a perfect game to that point.
The Blazers added to their advantage with two more runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by Feazell and on a run scoring single to center by Dean. Belhaven then tacked on a final run in the seventh to make it a 7-0 lead. Second baseman Josh Sturgis misplayed a ground ball by Benton and Moreno quickly took advantage by slamming an RBI double to right field for his fourth hit of the night.
Bennett turned in his second consecutive solid performance on the mound for Belhaven as he pitched the first seven innings and allowed just one hit. Bennett walked only one batter and struck out seven en route to his first win of the season.
Graham Upshaw pitched a scoreless eighth and
Wade Broyles closed out the game in the ninth.
Paul Moreno went 4 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI's to lead the Blazers offense.
Craig Dean was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's and
Kyle Feazell also drove in two runs on one hit. Foster chipped in with two hits and had one run batted in. Both Foster and Moreno turned in a pair of doubles; Diehl added another two bagger and Feazell tripled giving Belhaven six extra base hits in the game.
Travis Parker suffered the loss for Iowa Wesleyan on the mound tossing six innings with six runs and 11 hits allowed. Justin Williams, Marco Prieto, and Olson had the only hits in the game for Iowa Wesleyan.
Belhaven will take the field again on Friday afternoon when they open a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Series at Tougaloo College. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 PM and all the live play-by-play action can be heard via Stretch internet through the Belhaven Athletics website beginning with the pregame show at 12:45 PM.
