Blazers Fall to Mississippi College

Box Score
Jackson, MS-It was a tough night at the plate for the Belhaven baseball team as Mississippi College edged the Blazers on Tuesday night 3-2 in a Maloney Series contest at Smith-Wills Stadium. Belhaven was held to the two runs on three hits which was their lowest hit total of the season.

Mississippi College (13-1) got on the board first when Bo Bell led off the second inning with a home run to center putting the Choctaws on top 1-0. Mississippi College then extended the lead to 3-0 with two more runs on two hits in the top of the fourth. The Choctaws loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single to begin the frame and then Brannon Walls sent a sacrifice fly into right field to plate Bell. After Riley Galloway struck out Chris Glaze, Jacob Daniel delivered a two out single to chase home Stuart Magee for the innings second run.

Belhaven (16-4) finally got on the board in the seventh went Timmy Foster doubled with one out and moved to third base on a wild pitch by Daniel Cowart. Brandon Benton cashed in Foster on an RBI groundout to short cutting the deficit to 3-1. Blazer reliever Andy Kuehn held the Choctaws in check keeping Belhaven alive late in the game.

The Blazers made a comeback bid in the ninth when Drew Dillard led off the inning with a base hit and scored with two outs when Foster's ground ball to short was misplayed by Dakota Bodree making the score 3-2. Unfortunately, Cowart got Benton on a fly out to left field to end the game stranding the potential tying run at first base.

Galloway got the start and pitched well for Belhaven tossing the first five innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Galloway walked two and struck out seven as he falls to 1-1 on the season. Kuehn was solid in relief on Tuesday night firing the final four innings holding the Choctaws to three hits without allowing any runs. Kuehn struck out three in what may have been his best outing for the Blazers. Dillard, Benton, and Craig Dean had the only hits of the night for Belhaven.

Terrell Prescott earned the win for Mississippi College firing the first five innings holding Belhaven to just one hit with two walks and five strikeouts. Cowart pitched the final four innings and picked up his third save of the season. Daniel, Walls, and Bell each had RBI's while Clay Crosswhite and Andy Smith paced Mississippi College in hits with two each.

Belhaven will be back in action on Thursday night when they host Iowa Wesleyan College at Smith-Wills Stadium. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 PM and all the live play-by-play action can be heard via Stretch internet through the Belhaven Athletics website beginning with the pregame show at 5:45 PM.
