Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team stayed hot at the plate on Friday afternoon defeating Loyola University 15-1 in the opening game of a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series at Smith-Wills. The Blazers have scored 26 runs in their last two games in an 11-2 win over Millsaps on Tuesday afternoon and Friday's victory against the Wolfpack.
Belhaven starting pitcher
Brandt Hinton came out throwing strikes and cruised through the top half of the first inning. The Blazers then set the tone for the rest of the game in the bottom of the first inning with six runs off Alex Wolf who started the game on the mound for Loyola. With one out and a runner on second,
Lake Eiland got Belhaven on the board with a double down the left field line plating
Jimmy Gilford from second. Belhaven (9-3, 4-2 GCAC) then loaded the bases setting up a two run single by
John Michael Williamson to left field.
Craig Dean ripped a two run triple to right center and an RBI single by
Shawn Diehl capped the six run inning.
Leading 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Blazers put six more runs on the scoreboard with seven hits in the inning.
Drew Dillard tripled home a run and crossed the plate on a Gilford base hit to right. Later in the frame,
Brandon Benton sent home a run on an infield single followed by a two run double by
Timmy Foster down the left field line. Foster would score the final run of the inning on a throwing error by shortstop Taylor Domengeaux and when the dust had settled Belhaven enjoyed a 12-0 lead.
The Blazers added three more runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Gilford, a sacrifice fly by Foster, and an RBI ground ball by Williamson making the score 15-0. Loyola (3-7, 3-7 GCAC) got their only run of the game in the sixth when Bradley Brunet single and courtesy runner Chris Lizana crossed the plate following a groundout by Slade Sanders and a pair of wild pitches by Hinton.
Foster and Williamson had big games at the plate with three RBI's apiece for Belhaven. Dean and Gilford each drove in two runs while Diehl, Dillard, Eiland, and Benton each chipped in with runs batted in. Dillard and Eiland led the hit parade with both collecting three in the ball game. As a team, Belhaven pounded out 17 hits and had four triples with two of them being credited to Dillard. The Blazers also had three doubles against Loyola on Friday afternoon.
Hinton pitched all seven innings for Belhaven surrendering only one run on three hits. Hinton struck out nine Wolfpack hitters and did not issue any walks running his record to 2-0 on the season. Alex Wolf was tagged with the loss pitching 0.2 innings allowing six runs on four hits with two walks falling to 1-2. Joey Pajares gave up six runs on eight hits and Joel Gonzalez allowed three runs on four hits. Ryan Scott, Caleb Templet, and Bradley Brunet had the only hits for the Wolfpack in the game.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they conclude their three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Series at home against Loyola University in a doubleheader at Smith-Wills Stadium.
