Box Score
Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team pounded out 18 hits and outscored Millsaps College 11-2 on Tuesday night at Smith-Wills Stadium earning their second win in the 2010 chase for the Maloney Series Trophy.
Craig Dean blasted his third home run of the season, a three run shot off the scoreboard in left field, to spark a five run third inning that set the tone for the rest of the game. Belhaven's first win in this year's Maloney Series was a 4-3 victory over Mississippi College on February 10th.
Tuesday's game was scoreless after two innings until Millsaps got on the board with a run in the top of the third inning. Wes Perkins doubled to start the inning, but remained stuck at second with two outs in the inning. Perkins then stole third and when catcher
Alex Riser's throw sailed into left field Perkins crossed the plate to give the Majors a 1-0 lead.
Millsaps didn't enjoy the advantage for very long as Belhaven answered with five runs in the bottom of the third off pitcher Shelby Robertson. The Blazers had some opportunities to score in the first two innings, but failed to capitalize. Fortunately, the third inning proved to be a different story.
Jimmy Gilford and
Lake Eiland collected base hits to open the inning and with one out
Timmy Foster doubled down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1.
Jordan Brewer then sent home Eiland on a sacrifice fly to left to put the Blazers on top 2-1.
Alex Riser followed with a walk and set the table for Dean's three run homer to extend the Belhaven edge to 5-1.
Millsaps added what would be their final run of the game on a bases loaded infield single by Drew Leonard. Belhaven shortstop
Shawn Diehl helped limit the damage by robbing Will Hawkins of a two out single that would have brought at least one and probably two more runs home. Diehl fielded the ground ball in shallow center field behind second and fired a seed to first getting Hawkins by a half step.
The Majors loaded the bases again in the sixth inning, but failed to score.
Paul Faulkenberry came in to pitch for starter
Riley Galloway with one out and induced a fly ball to left felt off the bat of Jules Roussel.
Jordan Brewer made the catch and fired a strike to home plate nailing Tyler Berry trying to score for the final out of the inning. The Blazers then proceeded to put some distance between themselves and the Majors with a three spot in their half of the sixth. Eiland had an RBI double down the left field line and
Brandon Benton delivered a two out two run single to center field making the score 8-2 Belhaven.
The Blazers tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Riser reached on an error by Perkins to open the frame which eventually opened the door for all three runs. Eiland wrapped a two out two run double to left center and Benton capped the inning off with an RBI single up the middle that made the score 11-2. Belhaven relief pitchers
Andy Kuehn and
Graham Upshaw went on to shutdown the Majors the rest of the way and secure the win.
Dean had a great night at the plate for the Blazers with five hits in five at bats which included his three run homer in the third. Dean scored three times and drove in three others in the contest. Eiland went 4 for 5 with three RBI's and had two runs scored while Benton also tallied 3 RBI's on two hits in the game. Gilford, Foster, and Brewer each had two hits while Foster and Brewer both had an RBI apiece.
Galloway earned his first win of the season on the mound for Belhaven with his best outing of the season. Galloway pitched 5.1 innings and limited Millsaps to two runs on six hits. He had five strikeouts and only one of the two runs was earned. The Majors had scored 106 runs in eight games going into Tuesday's battle with Belhaven.
Robertson took the loss for Millsaps pitching the first three innings allowing five runs on nine hits. Boomer Hudson gave up three runs in 2.2 innings of relief while Zack Snider and Matt Conn surrendered two runs and one run respectively. Leonard had the lone RBI for the Majors and Berry led the team in hits with two.

The first pitch is slated for 6:00 PM and all the live play-by-play action can be heard via Stretch internet through the Belhaven Athletics website beginning with the pregame show at 5:45 PM.
