Blazers Roll to a 9-1 Victory over LSUA

Box Score
Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team didn't miss a beat on Tuesday night cruising to a 9-1 win over LSU-Alexandria despite the fact they had not played in almost a week. The offense stayed hot despite the cold temperatures by pounding out 13 hits in the contest. Belhaven used seven pitchers who combined to hold the Generals to one run on three hits.

Belhaven (6-1) got on the board in the bottom of the first with a run on a double by Timmy Foster off the base of the wall in center scoring Jimmy Gilford on the play. The Blazers tacked on their second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Derek Tortorich doubled off the wall to open the inning and courtesy runner Mark Gray eventually crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Drew Dillard.

Leading 2-0, the Blazers added to their advantage with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shawn Diehl reached second base on an error by the second baseman Brody Fontenot with two outs to keep the inning alive. Dillard made the Generals pay with a single up the middle scoring Diehl from second to extend the Belhaven edge to 3-0.

The sixth inning proved to be the clincher for the Blazers as the offense posted four runs on four hits and were aided by a pair of LSU-Alexandria (5-5) errors. Diehl began the inning with a triple followed by a Dillard walk to put runners on the corners. Dillard then proceeded to steal second base which set the table for Gilford who delivered a two run single to right field making the score 5-0 Belhaven. Later in the inning, the Generals gave Belhaven an extra out on an error which led to two unearned runs. John Michael Williamson drove home Foster on an RBI single and Williamson eventually crossed home plate on a Derek Tortorich base hit giving Belhaven a 7-0 lead.

Belhaven went on to plate single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Diehl scored the eighth run of the night in the seventh when he tripled and came home on a single to left field by Dillard. In the eighth, Brett Moss recorded a pinch hit RBI single as Jordan Brewer came in from second on the play to make it a 9-1 Blazer lead. LSUA got their only tally in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI groundout by Tid Hilger.

Belhaven used seven pitchers in Tuesday afternoon's game to try and get the pitching staff some work since the three game series with LSU-Shreveport was snowed out. Ryan Kassab pitched the first two innings allowing only on hit while recording three strikeouts. Alan McHenry fired the next two innings and did not surrender any hits while striking out two batters in route to his third win of the year. Chris Bennett, Paul Hoffman, Andy Kuehn, Brandt Hinton and Wade Broyles each saw time on the mound as well.

Belhaven was led on offense by Dillard who went 2 for 4 at the plate with three runs batted in. Gilford drove in two runs on the night going one for three at the plate while Foster, Tortorich, Williamson, and Moss each chipped in with an RBI. Dillard and Gilford are both tied for the team lead in RBI's with eight apiece. Foster, Diehl, and Tortorich also collected two hits each in the contest.

Colton Knuckles suffered the loss for LSUA on the mound as he tossed the first four innings allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. James Morgan, James Howell, and Logan Crow had the only hits of the night for the Generals. Hilger went 0 for 3 at the plate, but had the only run batted in.

Belhaven will return to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Hattiesburg to face William Carey University in game one of a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series with the Crusaders.
