Box Score
Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team stayed hot on Wednesday night with a 4-3 win over Mississippi College in the opening game of the Cowboy Maloney Series at Smith Wills Stadium. The Blazers will face the Choctaws two more times this season and will play Millsaps College three times in the Maloney Series.
Belhaven (5-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play on Wednesday night.
Riley Galloway got the start on the mound for the Blazers and shutdown the Choctaws in the top half of the first.
Drew Dillard tripled to lead off the home half of the first inning and came in to score on
Jimmy Gilford's second home run of the year that cleared the wall in right field. Following a groundout by
Lake Eiland,
Timmy Foster crushed the second triple of the inning to center field and crossed the plate on an RBI groundout to first by
Brandon Benton.
Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as Mississippi College answered with three runs of their own to tie the score in the top of the second. Bo Bell opened the inning with a single and Jacob Daniel doubled down the left field line with one out to put runners at second and third. Stuart Magee stepped to the plate and delivered a two run triple and scored on a two out single by Dakota Bodree knotting the game at 3-3.
The Choctaws loaded the bases in the fourth inning and failed to score after putting men on the corners with no one out. Galloway got a groundout and a strikeout before giving way to
Alan McHenry who induced Chase Herrin into a fly ball to right to end the inning. The out by McHenry could very well have been the turning point in the game as it kept the game tied and prevented a potential big inning that could have made things difficult for the Blazers.
Dillard led off the fifth inning for Belhaven with an infield single and then Gilford's base hit up the middle put runners on first and third with nobody out. Eiland hit a sharp ground ball that was fielded nicely by Shane Bennett who recorded the first out in the frame. However, Foster hit a slow roller up the first base line and the only play was to first base allowing Dillard to score what would be the winning run.
McHenry,
Brandt Hinton, and
Wade Broyles held down the fort the rest of the way to secure the 4-3 win. Broyles pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season. McHenry pitched 2.1 innings for his second win of the year allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Galloway fired the first 3.2 innings and was charged with three runs on six hits, but had four key strikeouts.
Jimmy Gilford had a big night at the plate going two for three with a home run and two RBI's for the Blazers. Dillard collected two hits and scored a pair of runs and Foster added a pair of hits with an RBI and a run scored.
Chris Ferris got the start and suffered the loss for Mississippi College working the first four innings allowing four runs on seven hits with a walk and one strikeout. The Choctaws were led on offense by Bell, Magee, and Glaze who each notched a pair of hits. Magee had a pair of runs batted in and Bodree tallied the other RBI for Mississippi College. The Choctaws left 12 men on base in Wednesday's contest.
Belhaven will hit the road on Saturday for a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at LSU-Shreveport with the first pitch slated for 1:00 PM. All the play by play action can be heard via Stretch Internet through the Belhaven Athletics website beginning with the pregame show at 12:45 PM.
