Blazers Upended by NCAA I Troy in Exhibition Game

Troy, AL-The Belhaven women's basketball team had a tough afternoon in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Troy University Saturday falling to the Trojans 75-39. The Blazers struggled to muster any offense and were unable to slow down Troy as the Trojans pulled away for the win.

Belhaven (6-3) had a pair of players in double figures as Sarah Carr led the way with 12 points which were all accounted for from the behind the three point arc. Erica Leflore added 10 points and nearly posted a double double with nine rebounds. Mycal Smith chipped in with eight rebounds and Kiara Johnson finished the game with six points and six rebounds.

As a team, Belhaven had a hard time finding the zone from the field going 13 for 67 on the afternoon for a 19.4 shooting percentage. The Blazers were 4 of 19 from three point land and hit 60 percent of their free throws (9-15). Troy owned a 55-40 edge in the rebounding department and forced 12 Blazer turnovers. Belhaven pressured the Trojans into 15 miscues on the afternoon.

Troy (2-6) was led by DeAngela Sword with 15 points trailed by Tenia Manuel who added 13 points and eight rebounds. Donette McNair notched a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in addition to three blocked shots. Sophie Kleeman nearly had another double double firing in nine points while grabbing nine rebounds. The Trojans hit 44.8 percent of their field goals, 47.1 percent of their triples, and 57.7 percent of their attempts at the charity stripe.

Troy built a 7-0 lead to begin the game and held Belhaven off the scoreboard for the first three minutes of the contest. Wendy Charles had the first basket of the contest for the Blazers at the 17:00 minute mark off an assist from Sarah Carr. The Trojans then went on a 12-2 run to increase their edge to 19-4 with 13:15 remaining in the first period and never looked back from there. Troy eventually enjoyed a 41-19 halftime lead and outscored the Blazers in the second half 34-20 to post the 75-39 win.

Belhaven will return to action at home against Pensacola Christian College on Saturday at 5:30 PM. It will be the first home contest for the Blazers since November 16th when they topped Blue Mountain College 77-55. Fans can follow all the action through live stats by clicking here.
