New Orleans, LA-The Belhaven women's basketball team snapped a two game losing skid Wednesday night with solid 66-32 win at the University of New Orleans. The Blazers, who had not played since November 20th, showed no signs of rust as Belhaven dominated the game from start to finish and never trailed at any point during the contest.
Belhaven (6-3) was led by forward
Jessica Barlow who had a team high 14 points on a 6 of 12 shooting night from the field. Barlow's 14 points matched a season high boosting her scoring average to 7.2 points per game this season. Barlow was also very active on the defensive end of the floor coming up with a team high four steals. Teammate Erica Leflore joined Barlow in double digits with 12 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Leflore is averaging 8.4 points per game and is the team's top rebounder at 6.8 boards per night.
On Wednesday night,
Kiara Johnson led Belhaven on the glass with eight rebounds and eight points. She also chipped in with a pair of assists and three steals.
Sarah Carr was held below her season average of 13.4 points per game, but still made her presence known on the offensive side of the floor with a game high six assists. Carr also came up with a pair of steals and a blocked shot on defense.
As a team, Belhaven hit 35.6 percent of their field goals (26-73), were 1 of 4 from three point land, and converted 68.4 percent of their attempts at the charity stripe (13-19). The Blazers controlled the paint both in points and rebounds. Belhaven outscored UNO in the paint 44-4 and enjoyed a big edge in the rebounding column at 59-35. Belhaven forced 27 UNO turnovers and promptly converted them into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor.
The University of New Orleans (0-7) was paced by Mirjam Sipos who had 14 points and five rebounds while contributing four steals. Kiedra Brocks had eight rebounds and a pair of points in the contest. UNO was held in check by a tough Blazer defense that kept their overall shooting percentage to 19.6 percent from the field (10-51). The Privateers finished the game with a three point percentage of 35.7 percent (5-14) and hit only 41.2 percent of their free throws (7-17).
Belhaven set the tone early opening the night with a 10-0 in the first two minutes of the game. Barlow put the Blazers on the board with a layup five seconds into the action and capped the run with another layup following a steal by Leflore. The Privateers quickly countered with an 8-0 run of their own to get back into the game momentarily, but would get no closer than two points the rest of the night. Belhaven took a 32-16 lead at halftime and continued to build the edge throughout the final 20 minutes to pull away for the 66-32 win.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to NCAA Division I Troy University for an exhibition game which is slated to get underway at 2:00 PM.
