Cleveland, GA- The Belhaven women's basketball team dropped a tough game on the road losing to Truett-McConnell College Friday night by a final score of 58-55. The Blazers had a low scoring night only managing to score 55 points on 30.9 percent shooting from the field and 22 percent from behind the arc.
Belhaven (5-2) was led on the offensive end of the court by
Sarah Carr and
Rachenia Powell. Carr was the leading scorer with 11 points and had a team high six assists. Carr was closely followed by Powell with 10 points and seven rebounds. Erica Leflore added nine points to the mix while Wendy Charles chipped in eight points and snatched a team high nine rebounds.
The Blazers out rebounded the Bears 47-33 pulling down 26 defensive rebounds and 21 offensive rebounds on the night. The Blazers' bench also managed to outscore the Bears bench thirteen to eight. Yet the Blazers had trouble putting the ball in the hoop Friday night shooting low percentages from the field, three pointers and free throws.
Truett-McConnell College (1-2) was led by Jasmine Butler who paced all scorers with 25 points and had a team high eight rebounds. Willani Love turned in nine points while Symone Hampton managed eight points and seven rebounds. The Bears were able to shoot 73.68% from the free-throw line essentially winning the game from there.
The Blazers started off the first half slow and watched as the Bears took a 15 point lead into half time 29-19. At the 11:48 mark in the second half, Symone Hampton gave the Bears a 15 point lead 45-30. With a little less than seven minutes to go,
Rachenia Powell hit back to back threes to put the Blazers up by two. With just under a minute remaining, Dorreka Faulkner hit two free throws to give the Bears a one point lead.
Sarah Carr then committed a turnover forcing the Blazers to foul. With the clock showing only seven seconds, Symone Hampton knocked down two free throws to put the Bears up by three. The Blazers managed to get a three point shot airborne at the buzzer by
Sarah Carr, but the final attempt was off the mark and Truett-McConnell escaped with the win.
It was the first loss on the road for Belhaven this season bringing their road game record to 3-1. The loss was also the Blazers second overall loss of the season leaving them at 5-2 so far this year. The Blazers will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Brenau University with the tip-off is set to for 3:00 PM.
