Georgetown, KY-The Belhaven football team wrapped up the 2010 season at Georgetown College Saturday losing to the 18
th ranked Tigers 24-19. The Blazers, who have been battling numerous injuries, hung right with Georgetown and were within six points late in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers were able to recover an onside kick following a
Douglas Ash Jr. touchdown to seal the win. Belhaven had some other chances in the contest, but just couldn't come up with a couple of key plays that may have changed the outcome on the scoreboard.
Georgetown (8-2, 6-0 MSC East) exploded out to a 14-0 lead on a pair of touchdown passes by quarterback Kaelin Ammons. Ammons' first strike was a 14 yard connection to Chris Gohman with 10:09 to play in the first quarter. The touchdown pass capped a 10 play 71 yard drive that took 4:51 off the clock. With 14:55 to go in the second quarter, Ammons found Randy Doss from 13 yards out and the Tigers were off and rolling.
It would have been easy for Belhaven (4-7, 1-5 MSC West) to pack it in at that point, but the team fought back and climbed back into the game. The Blazers got their first touchdown late in the second quarter as quarterback
Alex Williams fired a 50 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver
Cordario Calvin with 3:38 to go until the break. With 39 seconds left in the quarter, Belhaven linebacker
Ricky Wadlington intercepted an Ammons pass at the Blazer five yard line and returned it 14 yards to the 19. Belhaven moved the ball quickly up the field to set up a 47 yard
James Bryan field goal attempt on the final play of the half. Unfortunately, Andrew Jones fought through the line and blocked it to keep it a 14-7 Georgetown advantage at the intermission, but it could have been a bigger deficit without the Wadlington pick.
The only points in the third quarter came off the foot of Tiger kicker Alex Kreimer. Georgetown's defense held the Blazer offense on three plays and forced a punt to open the second half. The Tigers were able to drive the ball to the Belhaven four yard line, but the defense stood tall and forced Georgetown to settle for a 22 yard field goal to make it 17-7 with 7:54 remaining in the third period.
Early in the fourth quarter, Kreimer had another field goal attempt from 29 yards out, but the this time he pushed it wide right giving Belhaven new life at their own 20 yard line. The Blazers then engineered a 12 play 80 yard drive that was capped by a three yard touchdown run by
Kyle Henry to make it 17-13. Bryan's extra point try ended up being blocked by Zach Goebel and kept the lead at four points for Georgetown. It was the first extra point miss for Bryan this season. The Tigers answered with a touchdown on their next possession going 66 yards on just five plays to make it a two possession game at 24-13. Ammons found Coty Minnis on a 43 yard touchdown pass which was his third TD pass on the afternoon. Belhaven made one final attempt at a comeback when
Douglas Ash Jr. scampered in from two yards out with 3:18 to play. The two point conversion attempt failed and then Zach Crowder recovered the onside kick allowing the Tiger offense to run out the clock.
Williams had another solid game throwing the football completing 33 of his 51 pass attempts for 372 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked just once and did not throw an interception. Williams finished the year with 21 touchdown passes, 2830 passing yards, and averaged 257.3 yards of passing per game. Senior wide receiver
Kevin Dizer made nine catches for 80 yards and wide receiver
Cordario Calvin had five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Dizer and Calvin each had 57 receptions this season for 840 and 805 yards respectively. Calvin led the team in touchdown receptions with 10 and Dizer was second with five.
Harvey Mitchell, who has played well at the end of the season and is just a freshman, caught six passes on Saturday for 74 yards.
Belhaven could not get much going on the ground as the Tiger defense held Belhaven to just 42 yards rushing on the afternoon. Williams had the most yards from scrimmage with 24 yards on five carries.
Tim Sparks played in his first game this season and rushed three times for eight yards. However, despite struggling to run the ball overall, two of the Blazers three touchdowns came on the ground on runs by Henry and Ash Jr. As a team, Belhaven had 414 yards of total offense with 372 of those yards coming through the air.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Craig McDonald had 14 more tackles to lead the way on Saturday afternoon.
Jonathan Gamberi had his best game of the year with 12 tackles including a half tackle for a loss.
Ricky Wadlington had six tackles and for the season has 104 which is the third most for a single season in school history. Wadlington also came up with his first interception of the season on Saturday and teammate
Dewayne Whitten also picked off an errant Ammons pass on the afternoon.
For Georgetown, it was Ammons who carried the offense once again. He completed 18 of 30 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns. He was also the team's leading rusher with 77 yards on 12 total carries. Receiver Chris Gohman caught four passes for 46 yards and a touchdown followed by Rob Madon who made three catches for 61 yards. The Tigers had 457 yards of total offense and were about as balanced as any team can be. Georgetown had 229 yards through the air and 228 yards on the ground. On defense, Clay Brown had a solid game with 10 tackles and had a forced fumble to his credit. Zach Goebel had six tackles including three for a loss and also blocked a kick.
Belhaven had a tough finish to the season, but there are a number of positives the team can take into the offseason including the strong play of some of the younger players down the stretch and a stable of good players who will return for the 2011 season.
