Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team finished the 2010 regular season on Saturday night battling rival William Carey University to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Southern States Athletic Conference West Division action at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, locked up second place in the SSAC West and a number two seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
William Carey (9-3-3, 3-1-1 SSAC West), ranked 16th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, notched their only goal of the game in the 23rd minute when Reece Wilson connected on his seventh goal of the season off an assist by Jo Forstpointer. The Crusaders mounted a strong attack to create the shot in the box for Wilson.
Things looked bleak for Belhaven (14-1-2, 3-0-2 SSAC West) as timed began to wind down in the second half. The Blazers were out shot on the night 26-11, but finally got some offense going late in the final period. With just under three minutes to go in regulation,
Aaron McLoughlin brought the crowd to its feet as he slammed the ball past William Carey goalie Eleftherios Lazaridis to tie the game. It was McLoughlin's fifth goal of the season and the assist went to
Stefan Fernandez which was his fourth in 2010.
Neither team managed a goal in the first or second overtime thanks in large part to Belhaven goalie
Gautier Troch who made five of his 12 saves in overtime. It was arguably his best match of the season as the Crusaders relentlessly attacked the net the entire night and Troch was up to the challenge allowing only one shot to slip past.
McLoughlin paced the Blazer offense with three total shots including two on goal and the only score for Belhaven. Wilson had 10 total shots for William Carey with six being on goal and a score. Troch and Lazaridis both get the draw in net as each goalie played all 110 minutes. Lazaridis made one save compared to the 12 by Troch. The Belhaven offense only had two shots on goal against 13 shots on goal by William Carey.
Belhaven will kick off the postseason in the opening round of the SSAC tournament on Saturday when they host the number three seed from the East Division at H.T. Newell Field. The game time and opponent are yet to be determined.
