Montgomery, AL-The Belhaven men's soccer team, ranked 8th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, kept rolling on Tuesday afternoon thanks to a 3-1 Southern States Athletic Conference victory at Auburn University-Montgomery.
Stefan Fernandez notched the game winner as the Blazers used a pair of unanswered second half goals to pull out the win.
Belhaven (13-1-1, 2-0-1 SSAC) took the advantage early in the first half when
Guilherme Brandao broke the scoreless tie with his team leading 11th goal of the season in the 20th minute to make it a 1-0 contest. Fernandez was credited with his third assist of the season on the goal. The score remained at 1-0 until the 61st minute when Auburn University-Montgomery (6-7-2, 0-2 SSAC) knotted things up at 1-1. Christian Holthaus sent a corner kick into the box where Stephen Grooms and Vignir Benediktsson set up Atli Sigurdsson for the goal.
In the 80th minute Belhaven recaptured the lead at 2-1 on the shot by Fernandez which proved to be the game winner. Fernandez now has nine goals, 21 points and four game winning goals which is tops in the SSAC in that category.
Johnny Hayes fed the ball to Fernandez on the pass and picked up his third assist of the season. Belhaven tacked on an insurance goal in the 89th minute on an unassisted shot off the foot of
Will Monsour pushing the edge to 3-1. The Blazer defense then held firm for the final seconds to lock down the win.
Brandao was aggressive on the offensive side of the ball all afternoon as he led Belhaven in total shots with eight and shots on goal with four. Monsour unloaded four shots with three being on goal in a solid effort off the bench. Belhaven had the edge in total shots at 20-14 and held a major advantage in shots on goal at 10-4. Sigurdsson paced the Senators with a pair of shots and had the only goal of the day for AUM.

Gautier Troch played all 90 minutes and made three saves as he improves to 13-1-1 in goal this season. Steve Keller made seven saves in 90 minutes of work for AUM, but suffered the loss dropping his in goal record to 6-7-2.
