CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Ciaran Colvin pulled Belhaven within a goal in the second half, but Covenant scored late to defeat the Blazers 3-1 Saturday afternoon in CCS play at David Stanton Field. The loss ended Belhaven's six-match winning streak.
Covenant (3-6-1, 1-0-1 CCS) held a 14-11 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Belhaven (6-5-1, 1-1 CCS) earned six corners to the Scots' seven.
Justin Ramirez and Covenant goalkeeper JT Tolson made four saves apiece.
The Scots pressed early, taking three corners in the opening five minutes before Sam Conrad scored at 8:41 off assists from Henry Parker and Ian Adams. Jackson Bostrom made it 2-0 at 18:03, with Parker collecting his second assist.
Belhaven created chances despite the early deficit.
Courtland Williams forced a save in the 15th minute, and
Diego Sarzalejo put a shot on target in the 28th. The Blazers finished the first half with seven shots and five corners but went to the break down two.
Colvin gave Belhaven a way back at 68:46, scoring off an assist from
Graham Harris to cut the margin to 2-1. Conrad struck the woodwork just over a minute later, and
Adrian Sanchez forced Tolson into a save in the 73rd as the Blazers looked for the equalizer.
Ramirez kept Belhaven within reach with three saves in a 60-second stretch late in the half, stopping two Conrad attempts and one from Carter Weekley. Collin Kitchin scored off a Cooper O'Connor assist at 86:30 to put the match away for Covenant.
Sarzalejo and Sanchez led Belhaven with three shots each. Bostrom took a match-high six shots for the Scots.
Belhaven faces Sewanee on Thursday, Oct. 8, in Tupelo, Mississippi. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
