Pineville, LA-The Belhaven men's soccer team held of a pesky Louisiana College on the road Tuesday night en route to a 3-2 non-conference victory. The Blazers jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead only to see the Wildcats get within a single goal twice in the second half. However, Belhaven held off a late charge to earn their second win of 2009 and go to 2-1 this season.
It looked like the Blazers would dominate the match with their first score 9:17 seconds into the game.
Alan Hannon was credited with the goal which was his first on the season giving Belhaven a 1-0 lead. The Blazers then extended their advantage to 2-0 over the Wildcats (0-4) in the 34
th minute thanks to Sebastion Eriksson's first goal of the season. He was assisted on the play by
John Kehoe which was his third assist this year.
The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime, but Louisiana College would regroup and get back into the game early in the second period. In the 54th minute, Felipe' Escobedo pulled the Wildcats within one when he headed in the ball off a free kick by Doug Jackson. The Blazers came back to expand their lead to two goals again in the 60th minute on Jamie Poole's first goal on the year making the score 3-1. Louisiana College would not go away when Jackson answered Poole's goal just three minutes later to cut Belhaven's lead to one at 3-2. However, that's all the closer they would get as the Blazer defense tightened up and held off a final charge in the last minute by the Wildcats to hang on for the win.
As a team, Belhaven outshot Louisiana College 31-10 and kept Wildcat goalkeeper Joe Saverino busy forcing him to make 13 saves. Belhaven goalkeeper
Zach Wallace turned away two saves and earned his second win of the year in net. Hannon, Poole, and Eriksson each scored their first goals of the season and Hannon is now tied for second on the team in points with three.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday when they face Texas College on Saturday night at H.T. Newell field. The kickoff is slated for 5:00 PM.
