Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team snapped a three game losing streak against Tougaloo College on Friday night picking up a pair of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference wins over the Bulldogs 11-0 in game one and 13-1 in game two. The Blazers are now 28-14 overall and 19-8 in the GCAC. Tougaloo falls to 1-35 overall and 0-27 in league play.
Game One
The first contest was a makeup game from February 13th at Tougaloo when rain made the field unplayable. The Blazers didn't waste any time getting on the board in the top of the first inning picking up four runs on just one hit. Bulldog starting pitcher Michael Spann walked three batters and uncorked two wild pitches which allowed two Blazers to score.
Belhaven added single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to go up 6-0 over Tougaloo. In the fourth, Dean singled to lead off the frame and stole second base to get into scoring position. After a fly out by Brain McCormick and a foul out by
Shawn Diehl, Cooper delivered a two out single to right to drive home Dean. In the fifth, the Blazers got their run on
Craig Westcott's towering home run over the right field fence. It was his eighth long ball of the season and second RBI of the game.
Belhaven put the game away in the top of the sixth inning with five more runs off of relief pitcher Charles Kinslow. Cooper had an RBI double sending home Diehl who had singled earlier in the inning. Cooper later scored from third on a wild throw by catcher Derrick Singleton. Eiland crossed the plate for the innings third run on a wild pitch and Edwards capped the inning off with a two run single to center field and suddenly the Blazers were up 11-0.
Andy Kuehn pitched a scoreless sixth inning to lock up the win for starter
Craig Westcott who had fired the first five innings for Belhaven. It was Westcott's seventh victory of the season against just three defeats. In his five innings of work, he gave up only three hits and struck out seven Tougaloo batters. Spann was charged with the loss tossing the first five innings allowing 6 of the 11 Blazer runs.
Edwards had 3 RBI's and two hits to lead the Belhaven offense in game one. Cooper and Westcott each had two hits and 2 RBI's while Diehl also collected a pair of base hits. The Blazers had free reign of the bases getting eight steals in the game. Cooper had three to lead the way followed by Diehl with two, Eiland with two, and Dean with one.
Game Two
Belhaven scored at least one run in every inning on their way to a 13-1 victory in game two of the night. Cooper led the bottom of the first inning off with a single to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Eiland's base hit to right to put the Blazers on top 1-0. The bottom of the second inning saw
Chad Howard, who got the start in the right field; connect on the first home run of his career as he drove a 2-0 pitch from Brett Stegall over the left field fence to make it 2-0 Belhaven.
Tougaloo picked up their only run of the game in the top of the third on a two out double by Lanford Porter off Belhaven starter
Brandt Hinton plating Tyler Carter who had singled earlier in the inning. Belhaven lit up the scoreboard for three runs of their own in the third getting two of them on Westcott's second home run of the day and ninth of the season. Stegall hit four batters in the inning and when Cooper got hit with the bases loaded he picked up an RBI as
Brent Hudson came in from third to push the lead to 5-1.
Belhaven's big inning in game two was the fourth when they scored five of their 13 runs. Westcott had an RBI triple to plate Foster and Westcott scored on a single to center by Edwards.
Kyle Feazell tripled home Edwards with a line drive into the right field corner and Diehl followed with a double down the left field line to score courtesy runner
Mark Gray. Cooper capped the inning off with an RBI triple to right field and with that the Blazers extended their advantage to 10-1.
Belhaven tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Westcott got aboard on a walk and raced home on Hudson's triple to right field. Hudson later scored on a wild pitch by Bulldog relief pitcher Charles Kinslow who replaced Stegall at the beginning of the inning. Belhaven recorded their 13
th run in the six when pinch hitter
Justin Hill tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by pinch hitter
Mark Gray. Hill's triple was the fifth in the game for the Blazers.
Paul Hoffman took over for Hinton in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game with the mercy rule in effect. Hinton gave up four hits and a run in the first six innings and chalked up eight strikeouts to go to 5-5 on the season. Stegall was charged with 10 runs for Tougaloo as he sees his record fall to 1-5 in 2009.
Westcott had two hits and three runs batted in for the Blazers followed by Cooper who had a pair of hits and 2 RBI's. Howard finished the game with two hits and an RBI with Diehl, Gray, Feazell, Edwards, Hudson, and Eiland each adding an RBI each.
Belhaven will matchup with Tougaloo on Saturday afternoon in another GCAC doubleheader at Smith Wills Stadium beginning at 1 PM. All the play by play action can be heard via Stretch Internet through the Belhaven Athletics website.
