Blazers Drop Final Game of Series to Mobile

Box Score
Jackson, MS-The University of Mobile's David Cramblitt had four hits and 9 of their 10 RBI's, helping the Rams top the Belhaven baseball team 10-5 in the final game of a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series at Smith Wills Stadium on Saturday. The loss drops the Blazers record to 34-16 overall and 23-9 in the GCAC while Mobile improves to 29-21 overall and 16-15 in league play.

Cramblitt recorded four of his RBI's in the top of the first inning when he hit a grand slam over the left field fence off Belhaven starter Paul Faulkenberry. Mobile had loaded the bases with a double by Nelson Curry, and single by Stephen Stork, and a walk to Kevin Orso. Mobile extended the advantage to 5-0 with a run in the top of the third on a double by Orso and an RBI double by Cramblitt down the left field line.

The Blazers put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Timmy Foster double with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Scott Mitchell. Foster scored on a ground ball to first off the bat of Brent Hudson to trim Mobile's lead to four at 5-1.

Faulkenberry settled down and pitched well making it into the fifth inning where he gave up a leadoff double to Carlos Romero before Brandt Hinton was called in from the bullpen. Once again, following a fly out to center by Orso, Cramblitt delivered an RBI single to right center sending home Romero to put Mobile up 6-1.

The Blazers chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run on two hits. Chad Howard singled up the middle and advanced on a wild pitch to second base. With two outs in the inning, Chanse Cooper drove in the second Belhaven run of the game with a base hit to right center making the score 6-2 Mobile.

Belhaven made their big push in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one at 6-5. Craig Westcott double to begin the frame and with one down Hudson drew a walk to put runners on the corners after pinch runner Justin Hill moved to third on a fly ball by Foster. Mobile then made a call to the bullpen for Ira Turner to try and stop the Blazer rally. However, Charlie Edwards greeted him with a double down the left field line that chased home Hill and Hudson.

Following a hard line drive out to first base by Howard, McCormick laced a single to right center plating Edwards from second and just like that the Blazers were right back in the game. The Rams then went to the bullpen for the second time in the inning as Dustin Lee came in to get the final out to stop the rally.

From that point on, Lee shut down the Belhaven offense the rest of the way while the Ram offense mounted a rally of their own with four runs in the ninth to put the game away. Cramblitt went deep for the second time in the game with a three run blast to left field. Jared Baria had the other RBI in the inning on a sac fly that scored Brad Sheffield to make it a 10-5 game.

Faulkenberry was charged with the loss for the Blazers dropping his record to 2-2 on the season. He was responsible for six of the ten runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Mitchell was credited with the win for Mobile allowing four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Lee picked up the save for the Rams which was his first of the year. The Blazers were led at the plate by Edwards with 2 RBI's while Cooper, Hudson, and McCormick each had one RBI apiece.

Before the game, Belhaven recognized the graduating seniors in a Senior Day presentation at the center of the diamond.
