The Blazers fall to 26-12 overall and are 2-3 in the Maloney Series. The Majors who are ranked second in the latest ABCA Poll improve to 25-3 overall and 4-0 in the Maloney Series which locks up the title for Millsaps.
The game started out with Belhaven taking an early lead as Blazer starting pitcher
Joe Patterson set the Majors down in order in the top of the first and the Belhaven offense touched Millsaps starter Ryan Zemke for four runs in the opening frame. The first five batters reached for the Blazers with RBI doubles by
Lake Eiland and
Timmy Foster accounting for the first two runs.
Craig Westcott then drove his seventh home run of the season over the left field wall bringing home Foster from second making the score 4-0. Boomer Hudson came on in relief of Zemke to close out the inning and the limit the damage to four runs.
Patterson cruised through the first three innings but ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth. Jeremy Aliff started the inning off with a single and then Russ Boyd launched a two run home run to cut Belhaven's lead in half to 4-2. Millsaps quickly loaded the bases with nobody out and got another run on an RBI single by Billy Murphy down the right field line.
After striking out Tony Malashak, Patterson surrendered another bases loaded single to Todd Barnthouse which brought home the fourth run of the inning knotting the score at 4-4. The Majors went on to plate another run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hayes Brian and Millsaps took a 5-4 advantage.
The Blazers got the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs on two hits off of Hudson who had kept Belhaven's offense in check up to that point. With one out,
Shawn Diehl drew a walk and
Chanse Cooper beat out an infield single to put runners on first and second. Hudson then balked allowing Diehl to advance to third and Cooper to second. Eiland followed with a single to right plating Deihl from third and Cooper scored on the play when Hunter Owen bobbled the ball in right field in an attempt to quickly get the ball back into the infield. After the dust had settled, the Blazers were back on top 6-5.
Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as the Majors engineered their second five run inning of the night to regain the advantage at 10-6.
Brandt Hinton took over for Patterson on the mound and after striking out Owen to begin the inning; he hit Will Hawkins and surrendered walks to Josh Ordeneaux and Murphy to load the bases. Malashak laced a double down the left field line bringing in Hawkins and Ordeneaux making the score 7-6. Barnthouse and Brian each collected RBI singles and run number five of the inning came home on a wild pitch by
Kyle Medley.
Belhaven tried to mount a late rally in the ninth by loading the bases with two outs and scored their seventh run on a bases loaded walk to Diehl. However, John Pemberton got Cooper to ground out to end the game and preserve the victory for Millsaps. Hudson got the win for the Majors and goes to 4-0 on the year while Hinton takes the loss for the Blazers to fall to 4-5.
Offensively, Belhaven was led by Eiland and Westcott with two RBI's each. Eiland and Cooper had three hits apiece while Westcott, Foster and Fagan collected two base hits each. The Majors had Malashak, Boyd, Barnthouse, and Brian record a pair of RBI's each in the scorebook Tuesday night.
