Box Score
Clinton, MS-The Mississippi College Choctaws scored three runs in the first and three runs in the second and never looked back cruising to a 10-3 Maloney Series victory over the Belhaven baseball team Tuesday night. The Blazers are now 12-6 on the season and 1-1 in the Maloney series with the loss. Mississippi College improves to 6-3 overall and are 1-2 in the race for the Maloney Series trophy.
Belhaven struck first plating two runs in the top of the first to take a quick 2-0 lead after a half inning of play.
Chanse Cooper led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a one out single off the bat of
Timmy Foster. Foster then stole second base to get into scoring position and came home on
Craig Dean's two out single down the right field line.
It didn't take long for the Choctaws to take the lead away from the Blazers as Mississippi College tallied three runs in the bottom of the first off of Belhaven starter
Riley Galloway. The Choctaws had four base hits in the inning with two of the runs crossing the plate on a two out hit by Reed Prewitt.
The Blazers went down in order in the second and Mississippi tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits and a Belhaven error driving Galloway from the game.
Kyle Hunt came in to finish up the inning, but the Choctaws had done some damage building a 6-2 lead.
Belhaven got their only other run in the game after a dropped pop up by Mississippi College pitcher Tyler Seaman allowed the top of the fifth inning to continue.
Craig Westcott drove in the run with the bases loaded when he hit a ground ball up the middle with everyone reaching base safely on the fielders choice to make the score 6-3. Unfortunately, the Blazers could not capitalize for anymore runs as
Craig Dean flied out to right field to end the inning.
The Choctaws went on to score three more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to lock up the 10-3 win over Belhaven. Seaman pitched the first six innings allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season. Jack Craven and Josh Denson combined for three innings in relief to close out the game.
Galloway pitched 1.2 innings for the Blazers giving up six runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits as his record falls to 2-1 on the year with the loss.
Kyle Hunt,
Paul Hoffman, and
Golden Grasse also pitched on Tuesday night for Belhaven. As a team, the Blazers combined to walk nine Choctaw hitters. Offensively, Westcott, Foster, and Dean were credited with RBI's.
