Blazers Wrap Up the Weekend Splitting a Saturday Double Header

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team concluded the Belhaven Invitational with a win over McKendree University 15-5 in game one and a loss to Berry College in game two 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Smith Wills Stadium. The Blazers finish the week winning three out of their four games to improve to 12-5 on the season. McKendree is 0-7 to start 2009 while Berry is off to an 8-3 start.
 
Game One
 
Belhaven scored in every inning but the fourth in a six inning run rule victory over the Bearcats in game one. Following a run by McKendree in the top of the first, the Blazers got on the board thanks to an RBI single by Craig Westcott and an a two run single off the bat of Craig Dean to give Belhaven a 3-1 lead.
 
In the second the Blazers got a run when Shawn Diehl reached on a walk, stole second base, and the crossed the plate on a base hit by Lake Eiland. The Bearcats retaliated with two runs in the third on a two run home run by Adam Davinroy to make it 4-3 Belhaven.
 
The Blazers plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to 8-3. Timmy Foster launched his fourth home run of the year over the left field fence for the first run of the inning. Austin Fagan brought home a run on a sacrifice fly and Kyle Feazell connected on his second homer of the year over the left field wall with a man on.
 
McKendree recorded a pair of runs in the fourth but Belhaven put the game away in the final two innings with three in the fifth and four in the sixth. Feazell picked up another RBI with a single and Diehl collected two RBI's with a single into left field in the fifth.
 
The Blazers ended the contest in the sixth inning with the four runs it took to bring about the 10 run rule. Westcott belted his first long ball of the season over the center field fence followed shortly thereafter by a two run double off the bat of Fagan to make it 14-5. The game ending run came home on a single into right field by Chanse Cooper plating Fagan for the game winner.
 
Westcott pitched all six innings for the Blazers surrendering seven hits and five earned runs to run his record to 3-1. Offensively, Belhaven had a trio of players with three RBI's in the game. Cooper, Fagan, and Feazell plated three runs and Westcott led the hit parade with three against the Bearcats.
 
Game Two
 
Unfortunately for the Blazers, the offense did not carry over into game two against Berry College. The Vikings sent left hander Chris Rearick to the mound and he kept Belhaven off balance for the entire game with a good fast ball and outstanding breaking ball.
 
Berry got a single runs in the first, second, and fourth innings on an RBI singles by Andrew Star, Harman Watkins, and Jarrett Northcutt. The Blazers had five hits in the game with Cooper, Westcott, Foster, and Brain McCormick checking in with a hit a piece.
 
Brandt Hinton got the start on the mound and pitched the first five innings allowing seven hits and three runs. Only two of the three scores by the Bearcats were earned. Joe Patterson pitched two innings of scoreless baseball to finish up the game.
 
Belhaven returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Mississippi College for a 6 PM showdown with the Choctaws. All the play-by-play action can be heard via Stretch Internet through the Belhaven Athletics website.
