Blazers Pull Away in Second Half to Top Mobile

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team climbed back to .500 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with a convincing 71-54 win over the University of Mobile Saturday night in Rugg Arena. The Blazers have been in some tightly contested games all season and Saturday they were able put some distance between themselves and Mobile to close the game going away. Belhaven is now 15-10 overall and 7-7 in the GCAC while Mobile drops to 13-12 overall and 5-9 in conference play. The Blazers find themselves in a tie for fifth with Dillard and one game behind Spring Hill and Loyola for fourth place in the GCAC.
                                       
Belhaven came out strong to open the game and had built a double digit lead with about 4 minutes left to go in the opening period. Mobile then reeled off a 13-1 one going into the locker room to knot the score at 32-32. The Blazers hit 50 percent of their first half field goals, but allowed the Rams to make 15 first half trips to the free throw line where they connected on 13 of them. However, the defense kept Mobile at a first half field goal percentage of 28.6 percent.
 
The Blazers rebuilt their double digit advantage at 52-42 with 11:23 remaining in the game and even though Mobile made a push to get closer, Belhaven's defense tightened up and shut down the Rams. At points this season, teams have been able to make late second half runs against the Blazers, but that was not the case Saturday night. Mobile scored just five points over the final six minutes of play as Belhaven locked up a 71-54 victory.
 
Hunter Jeffrey had a season and game high 18 points to lead the Blazer offense. He hit 6 of his 10 shots from the field including 4 of 8 from three point land. Nathaniel Roche' had 16 points and a game high eight rebounds as he continues to play a big role for the Blazers. Iman Walcott finished the game with 14 points and Korey Whiting chipped in with 10 points.
 
As a team, the Blazers made 48.9 percent of their field goals and went to the free throw line 23 times in the second half converting on 16 of those shots. Belhaven had a slight rebounding edge over Mobile 34-33.
 
The Rams were led by Lelund LeDay with 15 pints followed by Treii Pace with eight. Mobile was held to a 30.4 percent shooting night from the field and only mage 15 percent of their three pointers.
 
Belhaven will travel to New Orleans on Thursday night to face off against Southern University of New Orleans. The Blazers topped Southern 80-73 in their first meeting of the season. The tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
