Troy, Ala-The Belhaven women's basketball team lost an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Troy University on Saturday afternoon by a final of 84-54. The Blazers fell behind early and could not regroup as the Trojans pulled away for the win.
Belhaven never had the lead in Saturday's game and the closest they came was at the 19:13 mark of the first half when the score was tied at 2-2 following a basket by
Jira Williams. Troy then went on a 17-6 run to build an 11point lead at 19-8 with 13:55 left in the first half and then extended their advantage to 19 points at 39-20 with just under two minutes to go before halftime. The Trojans eventually took a 43-25 lead into the locker room when the first half buzzer sounded and Belhaven could not climb any closer in the second half.
Sarah Carr had a solid afternoon for the Blazers leading the team in scoring with 16 points.
Jessica Barlow and
Courtney Ward each had nine points apiece followed by
Jira Williams who added eight points in the contest.
Octavia Mullins paced Belhaven on the boards with a team high 11 rebounds. Overall, Troy dominated the glass outrebounding the Blazers 49-25.
Belhaven once again played pressure defense forcing 28 Trojan turnovers, but it wasn't enough to overcome the rebounding advantage by Troy. As a team, the Blazers also struggled shooting the basketball connecting on 30.6 percent of their shots from the field. Belhaven made 31.6 percent of their attempts from behind the arc and were 10 of 17 from the free throw which equated to a 58.8 percentage.
Troy was led by Sarah McAppion who came off the bench to provide 19 points and six rebounds. Alyce Shearing followed with 16 points and Donette McNair tossed in 14 points and grabbed a game high 14 rebounds. Tenia Manuel rounded out the double digit scores for the Trojans with 12 points while posting nine rebounds. As a team, Troy was on fire from the field hitting 60.7 percent of their shots while making 50 percent of their three pointers. The Trojans went 8 of 15 at the charity stripe for a 53.3 shooting percentage.
Belhaven will return to action December 18th when they host the Coaches versus Cancer Classic in Rugg Arena. The Blazers will match up against Talladega at 6:00 PM on Friday the 18th and will then play Blue Mountain College the following evening at 5:00 PM.
