Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's basketball team pulled away for a 74-55 win over cross town rival Millsaps College Thursday night extending their winning streak to four games in a row. The Blazers aggressive defense applied pressure the entire night slowing the Majors offense forcing 35 turnovers which led to 44 of Belhaven's 74 points in the contest.
Millsaps (0-11) played well early and controlled the scoreboard for the majority of the opening six minutes of the game. Belhaven (9-2) led 4-2 following a three pointer by
Sarah Carr at the 18:03 mark of the first half. However, the Majors stormed ahead on the strength of a 10-2 run which opened up a six point advantage at 12-6 with 14:13 to play in the first half.
Belhaven then turned the tide over the next seven minutes to take control of the contest. The Blazers exploded with a 19-1 run and built a 12 point lead with just 7:41 remaining until halftime. The run was capped off on a layup by
Rachenia Powell and helped propel Belhaven to a 37-27 lead when the first half buzzer sounded.
The Blazers kicked started the second half with an 8-1 run that extended their advantage to 45-28 just two minutes into the final period. Belhaven got the half going on a pair of free throws by
Courtney Ward and a two point field goal by Carr topped off the 8-1 run. The Majors could get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way while Belhaven's largest lead was 22 points at 65-43 with 7:08 remaining in the game following a free throw by
Octavia Mullins.
The Blazers were led by Mullins with 15 points off the bench followed by
Jira Williams with 11 points. Mullins paced Belhaven on the boards with a team high 12 which included six rebounds on the offensive end.
Brittany Carr ended the night in double figures with 10 points while
Courtney Ward was effective in finding the open players on the floor as she dished out a game high five assists.
As a team, Belhaven hit 42.6 percent of their shots from the field, were one of nine from beyond the three point arc, and cashed in on 65.2 percent of their free throw opportunities. The Blazers also owned the boards with a 41-31 advantage over the Majors and tallied 19 of those rebounds on the offensive end of the floor leading to 17 second chance points. Defensively, Belhaven forced 35 turnovers and came away with 19 steals.
Millsaps had a big night from Shante' Morton who tossed in a game high 25 points while pulling down 10 rebounds to record the double double. The only other Majors player to hit double figures in scoring was Sarah Spann with 10 points off the bench. The Blazer defense limited Millsaps to a 38.6 percent shooting clip from the field. The Majors finished the contest at 30 percent from three point range and made good on 64.3 percent of their free throw opportunities.
Belhaven will return to action on January 7th when they travel to Dillard University for their Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener against the Bleu Devils. The tipoff is slated for 5:30 PM.
