Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's basketball team won big for the third time this week with a 74-55 victory over Pensacola Christian Saturday night. The Blazer defense was strong again forcing 35 turnovers which led to 40 points. Belhaven has a +11.8 turnover margin through the first five games of the season.
Belhaven (4-1) never trailed all night and opened the contest on a 12-4 run over the first four minutes leading to an eight point lead.
Jessica Barlow got the Belhaven offense going on a layup just five seconds into the game and capped off the 12-4 run with another layup at the 16-4 mark of the first half. With just under 10 minutes to go in the first half, Belhaven built the advantage to 14 points at 23-9 on a Barlow field goal. That basket began a 27-6 Blazer run over the final 9:38 of the first half that essentially put the game away and gave Belhaven a 50-15 halftime lead.
The Blazers maintained at least a 28 point edge throughout the remainder of the contest. Belhaven's largest lead was 39 points at 71-32 with 4:20 to play when
Mallory Hammack drilled one of her two three point shots in the game off an assist by
Stasha Thomas. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 28 points on a trio of three pointers by Alexia Floyd and a layup by Natalie Thibeaux making the score 71-43 with 2:53 remaining in the game. However, it was too little to late as the final two plus minutes ran off the clock giving the Blazers 74-55 lead.
Barlow and Thomas led the way for Belhaven with 14 points each followed by
Octavia Mullins who had 13 points.
Jira Williams rounded out the double digit scorers for Belhaven with 10 points on the night. Barlow had a game high 11 rebounds and in the process recorded her second double double of the season. Barlow and Williams are the team leaders in scoring averaging 13.4 points per night. Barlow and
Rachenia Powell came up with four steals each and
Courtney Ward had a team high five assists.
As a team, Belhaven hit 41.7 percent of their shots from the field, made 15.4 percent of their three point attempts, and were solid at the free throw line converting 81.3 percent of their shots from the stripe. Belhaven outrebounded Pensacola Christian 37-31 and the Blazers hauled down 19 boards on the offensive side of the floor. Belhaven had 14 second chance points and 40 of their 75 points came in the paint.
The Eagles were paced by Alexia Floyd who had 22 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes of work. Belhaven's defense kept the Pensacola offense in check holding the Eagles to 40 percent shooting from the field.
Belhaven will return to action on Saturday when they face Blue Mountain College at home in Rugg Arena starting at 4:00 PM. The Blazers lost their first meeting of the season with Toppers on November 5th 74-72.
