Blazers Cruise to 2-0 Win over LSU-Shreveport

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team picked up their first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with of the season with a 2-0 shutout of LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday night at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers dominated both sides of the ball and outshout the Pilots 21-2 on the night.
                                             
Despite spending the majority of the first period on LSU-Shreveport's side of the field, Belhaven (7-3-2, 1-1) was unable to score on a stingy Pilot defense. The Blazers attempted eight shots with six being on goal in the opening 45 minutes of action. LSU-Shreveport (3-6-1, 0-3) goalkeeper Rogerio Celaya turned away all six shots at the net to keep the score 0-0 as the first half expired.
 
Juan Rodriguez
Belhaven got on the board in the 59th minute thanks to Juan Rodriguez's team leading 11th goal of the season. Jose Morales was credited with the assist after getting the ball to Rodriguez in the open field to begin a breakaway. The Blazers continued to hold a 1-0 advantage until the 87th minute when Matt Clifton gave Belhaven an insurance tally with his second score in 2009. Rodriguez got his third assist of the season on a crossing pass that found Clifton open in front of the net putting the Blazers up 2-0. With Tuesday's goal and assist, Rodriguez has a team high 25 points. The Blazers defense kept the Pilots off the board the rest of the way to secure the win.
 
Offensively, John Kehoe led Belhaven in shot attempts at six with three being on goal. Clifton had five shots while Rodriguez had four shots with three being on goal in the Blazer victory. As a team, Belhaven had a shot on goal advantage of 12-1 over LSU-Shreveport.  
 
Defensively, Belhaven goalkeeper Gautier Troch got his second start in net this season and picked up his first win in 2009. Troch's other start was against UT-Brownsville on September 19th which ended in a 3-3 tie on a muddy field at the University of Mobile. Troch only had to make one save Tuesday night and faced just two shots from the LSU-Shreveport offense.
 
Marcos Carrillo and Jeff Penner had the only two shots while Celaya had 10 saves for the Pilots.
 
Belhaven, who is ranked 24th in the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll, will take the field again on Saturday as they host the University of Mobile in another GCAC match at H.T. Newell Field. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
