Belhaven Rolls to an 89-57 Victory over Wesley

Jackson, MS-A suffocating defense and solid first half helped the Belhaven women's basketball team to an 89-57 win against Wesley College Saturday night in the Belhaven Holiday Classic. It was the third win by the Lady Blazers over the Lady Warriors in the 2008-2009 campaign. Belhaven is off to a quick start this year as the win gave them their ninth victory against just three setbacks.

The Lady Blazers set the tone early scoring the first 13 points of the game and the defense didn't allow a Wesley basket for the first 4:30 of the contest. Jira Williams got the Lady Blazers going, scoring the first two points of the game in the opening minute of play. Williams finished the night with a team high 12 points. Octavia Mullins capped of the opening 20 minutes of play on a last second field goal to give Belhaven a 24 point 47-23 halftime lead.
 
Mallory Hammack had nine first half points for the Lady Blazers and as a team Belhaven drilled 67 percent of their shots from the field. The Lady Blazers also forced 15 Wesley turnovers and came away with eight steals. The Lady Warriors were led in the first half by Myeshia Johnson and Natasha Taylor who each 11 points. As a team, Wesley converted on 47 percent of their field goals while going 8 of 16 at the free throw line.
 
In the second half, Belhaven was able to maintain a lead of 20 points or more for the rest of the game. The Lady Warriors fought hard to get back within 20 at the 9:09 mark but could get no closer. The Lady Blazer defense was too much in route to the 32 point win.
 
Jira Williams led Belhaven with 12 points followed by Mallory Hammack with 11 points and Jaelyn Stringer tossed in 10 points. Brittany Skipper and Octavia Mullins had four rebounds apiece to lead the team on the boards. The Lady Blazers finished the night converting 57 percent of their shots from the field while the defense forced Wesley into 29 turnovers.
 
The Lady Warriors had solid efforts from Myeshia Johnson who had a game high 22 points and 11 rebounds to record the double double. Natasha Taylor chipped in with 14 points and Jasmine Whitley contributed 10 points.
 
Belhaven is now 9-3 on the season and will return to action Thursday night at Spring Hill College beginning at 5:30. It will be the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener for the Lady Blazers.
