Florence, MS-The Belhaven women's basketball team played pressure defense and owned the paint in the second half in route to a 77-50 win at Wesley College Tuesday night. The Lady Blazers are now 4-1 on the season after their second victory over the Lady Warriors this season.
Belhaven never trailed in the game jumping out to an early 2-0 lead on a basket by
Jaelyn Stringer 34 seconds into the game. The game was tied only once and that was 2-2 with 15:12 remaining in the first half. From there, the Lady Blazers went on a 12-2 run to build the advantage to 14-4 with 9:48 to go on the first half clock. The Lady Warriors fought back to get within five with under 4 minutes to play in the opening period. Belhaven then stretched the lead out to 12 points, 27-15, before Wesley went on a mini four nothing run to close out the half.
The Lady Blazers went 10-34 from the field in the first half but pulled down 12 offensive rebounds while forcing 18 Lady Warrior turnovers to create more looks at the basket.
Merve Yildirm and
Jira Williams led Belhaven in scoring with seven first half points. Wesley hit 9 of their 26 shots for a field goal percentage of 35 percent. Myeshia Johnson had eight first half points and nine rebounds to pace the Lady Warriors.
The second half belonged to Belhaven as the Lady Blazers extended their lead to 21 points with 12:30 play. The Lady Warriors would close the gap to 13 points with 3:40 to go but they would not score another point the rest of the night. Belhaven exploded on a 14-0 run to end the game and lock up their fourth win of the season.
The Lady Blazers had three players score in double figures with
Jira Williams and
Jaelyn Stringer leading the pack with 13 points each.
Merve Yildirm had a nice game off the bench by dropping in 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field. Williams also led the team in rebounding hauling in eight boards on the night. As team, the Lady Blazers hit 41 percent of their shots and knocked down half of their three point attempts. Belhaven's defense was solid, forcing 34 Lady Warrior turnovers and owning the boards 47-39.
Belhaven will travel to East Texas Baptist University this weekend for the East Texas Baptist Classic. Belhaven will open the host school Friday night at 7:30 PM.
