Byrd, Roberts and Tabor Earn USA South Weekly Honors

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven landed a player from each phase of the game on the USA South's weekly awards list Monday following the Blazers' dramatic 45-44 win over East Texas Baptist.

Running back Julien Tabor was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, defensive lineman Jimmy Byrd earned Defensive Player of the Week honors and defensive back Xander Roberts was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Tabor powered the Belhaven offense with 155 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. The sophomore rushed 24 times for 119 yards and added two receptions for 36 yards.

His 62-yard touchdown run tied the game at 14 in a first quarter that featured six touchdowns. With the Blazers trailing 44-31 late in the third quarter, Tabor accounted for 48 yards on a pivotal 66-yard scoring drive. He finished the possession with a four-yard touchdown run that pulled Belhaven within six and began the Blazers' run of 14 unanswered points.

Through two games, Tabor leads Belhaven with 213 rushing yards on 40 carries, an average of 5.3 yards per attempt. He also caught three passes for 37 yards and leads the team with 250 all-purpose yards.

Byrd turned in a career night at the center of a Belhaven defense that recorded 13 tackles for loss, five sacks and three takeaways. The senior finished with a career-high 10 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry.

His fumble recovery late in the first quarter gave the Blazers possession at the ETBU 39 and led to a 41-yard field goal that put Belhaven in front early in the second quarter. Byrd is tied for the team lead with 13 tackles this season and leads the Blazers with three tackles for loss and two sacks. He has also recovered two fumbles through the opening two games.

Roberts delivered one of the most important plays of Saturday's win when he blocked an ETBU extra-point attempt late in the second quarter. That single point proved to be the difference.

The senior defensive back also contributed two pass breakups and a tackle for loss. His third-down stop in the fourth quarter helped force an ETBU punt with Belhaven protecting its 45-44 lead. Roberts has seven solo tackles, four pass breakups, one tackle for loss, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick this season.

The three award-winning performances helped Belhaven erase a 13-point second-half deficit and hold ETBU scoreless during the fourth quarter. The Blazers scored the final 14 points of the game and secured the victory with Alex Desarzant's interception at the Belhaven 6-yard line with nine seconds remaining.

Belhaven stays at home this Saturday, Sept. 19, to host Central College at Belhaven Bowl Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
