MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Kyle Norris pinned Methodist inside its own 20-yard line five times in Belhaven's 20-15 road win Saturday. On Tuesday, he became the first Blazer to earn two individual D3football.com Team of the Week selections in the same season.
Norris is one of four punters in NCAA Division III to earn the honor in consecutive weeks in the last 10 seasons, through Week 9 of this year. He joins Tyler Kohman (2017), Grant Gonya (2022) and Ethan Klapatch (2023). Eight punters, including Norris, earned multiple selections in the same season over that span.
The Gardendale, Ala., native punted six times for 280 yards against Methodist, averaging 46.7 yards per kick. His five punts inside the 20 were a career high, and none went for a touchback. He put the Monarchs at their own 1 with a 38-yard punt in the first quarter and forced a fair catch at the 3 to open the fourth quarter. He has recorded three punts at the 1-yard line in the last two weeks combined.
Norris' longest punt went 59 yards in the first quarter. His final one came with Belhaven trailing 15-14 in the fourth, when he sent a 56-yarder from the Blazers' 29 to the Methodist 15. The defense forced a punt on the ensuing possession, keeping the deficit at a single point.
Over the two games that earned him national honors, Norris averaged 50.3 yards on 11 punts, with nine inside the 20 and six of at least 50 yards. His first selection came after he averaged 54.6 yards against Southern Virginia.
Through eight games, Norris has punted 37 times for 1,714 yards. His 46.32-yard average leads NCAA Division III by 2.03 yards over Alma's Jacob Kluk, would lead Division II and ranks 13th when the NCAA's four football leaderboards are combined. He also leads the USA South with 15 punts of at least 50 yards.
That season average is nearly three yards above James Bryan's Belhaven record of 43.4, set in 2012. Norris has 5,259 yards on 123 career punts, placing him fourth in program history in punting yards and third in average at 42.8 yards per punt.
Belhaven (4-4, 3-2 USA South) returns to Belhaven Bowl Stadium to host LaGrange on Saturday, Nov. 7, at noon for Senior Day.
