Alumni Spotlight: Carl Blundell

Why did you choose Belhaven?

"(Coach) Mac came to one of the Tyler practices and sat a few of us down. He basically told us that if we all came to Belhaven we would have a real shot at competing for silverware. That was always my goal, and with Belhaven's history of success, it made the decision easy."

What is your favorite memory from your time as a Blazer?

"Personally, my favorite memory has to be winning the national championship (in 2012). We went into the tournament on a bit of a rough run and barely got in as one of the last at large bids. Will, our top scorer, tore his hamstring and was out, and because of our low ranking we opened up against an undefeated team. In that game DC broke his leg, so we were dealing with adversity from every angle. There was plenty of reasons to not win, but the team came together and managed to accomplish something pretty special as a group

What do you miss the most from your time at Belhaven?

What I miss the most is the family aspect of it all. Being on the field every day working towards a common goal, then spending time together off the field. Whether it was 20 Brazilians at the apartment cooking food and playing guitar, supporting Majors business ventures or seeing Marcos show off his DJ skills. It was more than just soccer. I didn't realize how good I had it!

How do you stay involved with the game of soccer today?

I'm still very much involved in soccer. I'm currently the associate head coach at Pearl River Community College and also coach club at GCU. I make sure to keep up with Belhaven's success as well, which Gleddy does a fantastic job of keeping the alumni in the loop."

Who is the best player you played with?

I've had the pleasure of playing with some amazing players. Seeing Victor France score some ridiculous free kicks, got to play behind two amazing CBs in Rodrigo (Suarez) and Tom (Gavin). To have two CB who could read the game so well made my job so easy! They'd be the first to admit they weren't the fastest but they hardly ever got beat on the dribble. That said the best player i played with at Belhaven was probably Loic Miliani. He was a special, special player!!
