JACKSON, Miss. - Jensen Ward put Belhaven in front late in the first half, but Pensacola State answered 87 seconds later, and the teams played to a 1-1 draw Thursday night at Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
Belhaven created the better chances early.
Abby Jordan forced a save in the 10th minute, and the Blazers earned two corners in quick succession just past the half-hour mark.
Jordan Robinson then set up Ward's goal at 37:19 to give Belhaven the lead.
Pensacola State responded at 38:46 when Julianna Williams scored unassisted, sending the match into halftime tied.
Neither side found a breakthrough after the break.
Mary McCardle and
Faith Dreyer sent attempts wide for Belhaven, while
Sidney Roest turned away a shot from Tamryn DenHerder in the 77th minute. The Blazers had one final opportunity, earning a corner with 17 seconds remaining, but
Keelin Gray's shot went wide as time expired.
Belhaven outshot Pensacola State 8-6, with each team placing two shots on goal and taking four corner kicks. Jordan led the Blazers with two shots, while Roest played all 90 minutes and made one save. Williams accounted for four of Pensacola State's six shots.
The Blazers eturn to the road Wednesday, Oct. 7, to face MUW at 5 p.m. in Columbus, Mississippi.
