Belhaven Track and Field Builds on Opening Meet at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Belhaven Men's and Women's Track and Field teams returned to action Saturday at the Samford Open, competing in their second indoor meet of the season.

The men opened the day in the 60 meters with freshman Seth Haynes pacing the Blazers at 7.44. Juniors Neveah Matthews and Jonah Moore both recorded personal-best performances, with Matthews improving to 7.81 after running 7.86 the previous day, while Moore lowered his time from 8.04 to 7.97.

In the 200 meters, freshman Kenneth Mills continued his strong weekend with a personal-best 23.36, improving on his 23.39 from Friday. Jaheem Cook followed with a 25.47. The men's 400 meters saw Julius Phillips post a 51.61, while Leeson Taylor III finished in 52.96. In the 800 meters, Jacob Turner recorded a personal-best 2:13.32, shaving time off his 2:13.65 effort from the opening meet.

Middle-distance improvements continued in the mile, where senior Drew Duckworth ran a personal-best 5:00.24, a significant improvement from his 5:42.61 on Friday. Donovan Hurst followed with a 5:18.00.

On the women's side, freshman Brycelyn Townsend competed in the 60 meters, finishing in 8.47. Townsend later returned in the 200 meters, posting a 28.36, while Yasmine McCann clocked a 28.29.

The women's 400 meters highlighted one of the top performances of the meet for Belhaven. Senior Kimona Haynes ran a 59.75, improving on her 26.14 split from the 200 meters on Friday and earning a national mark that ranks among the top Division III times this season. Courtney Adams followed in the event with a time of 1:09.01.

In the field events, freshman Mallory Golden continued to impress in the high jump. Golden cleared 1.55 meters, improving on her 1.51-meter mark from the previous day and recording both a personal best and a nationally ranked performance. On the men's side, Alex Reed posted a mark of 5.81 meters in the long jump.

The Blazers wrap up their weekend in Birmingham tomorrow at the KMS Open. The first event starts at 8:00 AM.
