MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championshps was a successful one for the Belhaven Track & Field program as
Ashaunti Barnes and
Kelsey Singleton earned qualification to the finals in their respective events following strong showings in preliminary competition.
Ashaunti Barnes put together a stellar performance in the Women's 400 Meters on Friday as she took top spot in her heat with a program record time of 55.26 seconds. Barnes' qualifying time was the third fastest time of the preliminary round among the 22 competitors and puts Barnes in strong contention for Saturday's final set for 4:10 PM CT.
Kelsey Singleton was the second Blazer on the day to book a spot in an event final as he turned in a qualifying time in the Men's 400 Meters. Singleton posted a time of 47.24 seconds which landed him a top three finish in his heat and the fourth best time overall. Singleton's 400 Meter final is set for 4:20 PM CT on Saturday.
Kimona Haynes got her first taste of the Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday as she joined Barnes in the Women's 400 Meters. Haynes turned in a time of 57.28 seconds and placed 20th overall in her first nationals appearance.
Syniah Sims rounded out the quartet of Blazers competing on Friday as she competed in the Women's 100 Meters. Sims posted a time of 12.21 seconds and placed 20th overall to wrap up her action at the Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Saturday is set to be a busy day for the Blazers as they close out their trip to Myrtle Beach.
Neal Terry will get things going for the Green & Gold as he competes in the Men's Triple Jump which is set for 12:00 PM CT. He'll be followed by Barnes and Singleton, as mentioned above, who will have their respective 400 Meter finals.
