LONGVIEW, Texas - The Belhaven Golf team posted a strong first day at the FST Invitational hosted at the Pinecrest Country Club and currently sit 6th among teams in the tournament.
The Blazers finished the 36-hole day strong posting the lowest team total in Round Two. Additionally, the Blazers' second round was a historic one for the program, marking the second lowest score relative to par 291 (+3) in program history.
The Blazers opened the day with a 308 (+20) first round score led by
Jake Shmonov who posted a 74 (+2) and was closely followed by
Will Justice who finished the opening 18 with a 75 (+3). Despite strong rounds from Shmonov and Justice, the Blazers had ground to make up, sitting in 10th as a team after the opening round.
Belhaven bounced back to move up four places following the second round and put themselves within eight shots of the top three teams. The second round was led by
Will Justice who shot a 71 (-1), the lone under par round for the Blazers so far.
Luke Couch carded a 72 (E), improving on his first round score by eight shots. With the round counting the top four scores,
Andrew Scherer and
Ashton Anderson each shot a 74 (+2) marking a team total of 291 (+3) for the round.
Belhaven will look to chase down the top teams in the tournament tomorrow when they resume play in Longview, Texas. The Blazers will tee off at 8:30 AM for the final round of the 54-hold tournament.
