JACKSON, Miss. - Ellie Jones of the Belhaven Softball team and Brett Sanchez of the Belhaven Baseball team have been named the C Spire Athletes of the Week for their performances on the field this past week.
Jones helped the Blazers to a series win over the #25 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru in Belton, Texas. The Nesbit, Miss. native hit .533 (8-for-15) and totaled two homeruns, four doubles, 10 RBI and three runs scored over four games this past week. Her best game came in game two against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor when she went 2-for-3 and had five RBI.
On the season, Jones has played in all 23 games and holds a .400 batting average with a 1.127 OPS. Additionally, she has seven doubles, four home runs, 24 RBI and a slugging percentage of .692 on the year.
Brett Sanchez's performance on the mound this past Friday night helped the Blazers to a 2-1 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru. Sanchez went the distance for the Blazers to earn his second complete game of the season. Sanchez allowed only one run, gave up seven hits, and had seven strikeouts.
On the season, Sanchez is 3-1 in six appearances on the mound for the Blazers and holds a 2.18 ERA on the bump, as he currently leads the Blazers' pitching staff with 44 strikeouts through 45.1 innings pitched.
Jones and the rest of the Belhaven Softball team will return to action on Friday, April 1 against the McMurry University Warhawks in Abilene, Texas. The first pitch of the doubleheader on Friday will begin at 3:00 p.m. The final game of the series will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 in Abilene.
