JACKSON, Miss. - The No. 16 ranked Belhaven Baseball team used a late offensive surge to pull away from Millsaps, earning a 15-10 win on Tuesday night at Twenty Field to secure the Cowboy Maloney's Series title for the seventh consecutive season and eighth overall.
Belhaven wasted no time getting on the board.
In the first inning,
Blake McCarthy was hit by a pitch to start things off, and
Brayden Thompson followed with a single.
Austin Canale drove in the first run with an RBI single, and
Owen Abney added another RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 early.
Millsaps answered with a run in the bottom half, but Belhaven stayed aggressive.
In the third, Canale again sparked the offense, reaching base before coming home on a double steal sequence with
Hayden Roberts to push the lead to 3-1.
The Blazers added another in the fifth when Thompson singled and later scored on a ground ball, extending the lead to 4-1.
Millsaps swung momentum in the middle innings.
In the fifth, a combination of walks, defensive miscues, and timely hits led to a four-run inning as the Majors took a 5-4 lead. They added another run in the sixth on a single and a wild pitch, stretching the advantage to 6-4.
Belhaven's pitching staff worked to limit further damage. After the go-ahead inning, the Blazers escaped additional trouble with a strikeout to strand runners and keep the deficit manageable.
Belhaven responded in the seventh.
Canale worked a walk and Roberts followed with a single to put two on. Abney delivered in a big spot, ripping a two-run double to left center to tie the game at 6-6.
The bullpen followed with a shutdown inning to keep things even heading into the late frames.
The game turned in the eighth inning as Belhaven erupted for nine runs.
The rally started with traffic on the bases, as
Marvin Jackson and
Parker Ryan were both hit by pitches. A defensive error allowed two runs to score and gave the Blazers the lead. Moments later,
Jake McCann added pressure on the bases, and a sacrifice fly from Roberts brought in another run.
Abney continued his strong night with an RBI single, and after a pair of hit-by-pitches loaded the bases, Ryan delivered the biggest swing of the game, launching a grand slam to right center to push the lead to 15-6.
Millsaps made one last push in the eighth and ninth, scoring four runs combined and bringing the tying run into the on-deck circle in the final inning.
Belhaven worked out of the jam, getting the final out on a ground ball to secure the win and the series.
The Blazers have now won the series seven straight seasons and eight times overall, with the rivalry not completed in 2021.
Belhaven will look to carry the momentum forward as the Blazers continue conference play with a three-game series later this week at Huntingdon. The Blazers play one game in Montgomery at 6:00 PM followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
