Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After playing three straight home games, the men's Blazer soccer team hit the road en-route to Birmingham, Alabama for the teams first long road trip of the season to take on Birmingham-Southern.Â
Tonights matchup featured many shots, with many of those shots coming inches from finding the back of the net on both sides. In other words, the matchup got intense at many points throughout this contest.
With a scoreless first period and only five total shots between the two teams, the second half quickly got interesting.Â
With just two shots for the Blazers through the first 45 minutes of play, the Blazers would take a season high 10 second half shots in the next 45 minute period.Â
Yet, despite all the shots being taken by the Blazers, they suddenly found themselves behind 1-0 after a quick score off a header by Birmingham-Southerns Ryan Hepp with just 17 minutes left to go in play.Â
The shots continued to fly for the Blazers and with just 12 minutes left on the clock, the Blazers finally had one hit the back of the net with help from junior midfielder, and recent ASC watch list honoree, John Dunbar.
With the score tied, and the clock at all zeros, the Blazers would need overtime for the third time in five games this season, in order to decide the outcome.Â
Both Birmingham-Southern and the Blazers would combine for 8 total shots in both overtime periods, and at times it would take a heroic effort by both goalies to extend a little extra in order to make a finger diving save to keep the score knotted at 1-1.
Despite 16 total shots by the visiting Blazers, and 11 shots by Birmingham Southern, it was ultimately amazing goalie play that would keep this intense matchup tied at 1-1 when the final horn blew.Â
Before tonights matchup the Blazers were averaging just over eight shots per contest. Tonights 16 shots would double that season average. Junior, John Dunbar, led the Blazers (0-2-3) tonight with his lone goal, as well as, 6 shots taken with 3 of those being on goal.
The Green and Gold will return to action this Saturday with another road trip to Pineville, Louisiana to take on the Louisiana College Wildcats (0-3). That matchup is set to kick off at 4:30 p.m.
