JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven women's tennis team won their fifth consecutive match of the year on Saturday after defeating both Tougaloo and Delta State at home. The Blazers won both matches decisively, after routing Tougaloo 8-1 and rolling past Delta State 7-2. The Blazers are now 5-1 on the season.
Against Tougaloo, Ivanna Echezuria and Natalia Lopez won at No. 1 doubles 8-0. The duo have yet to drop a match together this season. Jandayia Lubin and Caroline Terry won at No. 2 doubles 8-4, and Mary Lichlyter and Hannah Daly registered an 8-0 match win at No. 3.
In singles play, the Blazers won at the first five positions. Lubin won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-0, while Lichlyter cruised 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Terry won 8-1. Alexandria Furdge won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Daly secured a win at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
In the second match of the afternoon against Delta State, the Blazers led 2-1 heading into singles play. The Green and Gold won at No. 3 doubles by default, and Echezuria and Lopez pulled out a 9-8 victory at the No.1 spot after winning 7-4 in the tiebreaker to keep their perfect record on the year alive.
Echezuria won 5-4 after her opponent retired in the first set at No. 1 singles. Lopez lost at No. 2 singles, retiring after a 6-4 loss in the first set. Lubin won by default at No. 3, and Furdge won by default at No. 6.
Lichlyter won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Terry never lost a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
Belhaven will be back in action on Thursday at home against Millsaps at 2 p.m.
