MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Belhaven's women's tennis came away with their first victory of the 2017 season on Friday afternoon, after holding off Rhodes College 5-4 on the road.

The Blazers improve to 1-1 on the year after dropping their first match of the season to Mobile last Friday at home.

The Blazers fell behind quickly in a 2-1 hole after winning only one doubles match at the No. 1 doubles spot. Natalia Lopez and Ivanna Echezuria came away victorious with a decisive 8-3 win. The duo improves to 2-0 at No. 1 doubles this season.

In singles play, the Blazers rallied to win four of the six matches to claim the 5-4 victory. Lopez fell at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1. Echezuria remained perfect on the season in singles play with an easy 6-1, 6-0 match.

Mary Lichlyter won at No. 3 singles for the second time this season with a 7-6, 6-2 win. Hannah Daly was defeated at No. 4 singles, and the Blazers trailed the match 4-3 with only Caroline Terry and Alexandria Furdge left in action.

Luckily for the Green and Gold, both Terry and Furdge won their matches. Terry held on to win at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-3, and Furdge won in a three-set marathon 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to seal the win. Furdge's match was the final match to complete play.

The Blazers will play twice tomorrow with a match in Memphis at 9 a.m. against Huntingdon College, and then a 3 p.m. match at Blue Mountain College in New Albany, Miss.
