MOBILE, Ala. – The Belhaven Men's Tennis team was eliminated from the NCCAA National Championship with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Campbellsville on Wednesday afternoon at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
After splitting Tuesday's action in Pool A, the Blazers finish pool play in third place with a 1-2 record. The top two teams in the two pools advance to the semifinals.
Belhaven, in three straight postseason matches took two of three in doubles action.
Rene Ramos and
Omar Lopez at the No. 2 point survived Adrian Sabrojo and Victor Ahlbeck, 8-6. At the No. 3 point,
Rafael Siqueira and
Pawel Tarasewicz defeated Alejandro Soriano and Alex Spalding 8-3.
In singles, Tarasewicz gave Belhaven their third point at the No. 5 point taking the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, against Ben Ward.
Tomas Ojeda put Belhaven within one point of clinching the match with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory against Sabrojo at the No. 3 point.
However, Campbellsville (14-9) took victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 points to tie the match at four. The match came down to the No. 6 point between
Rene Ramos and Alex Spalding. Ramos, down 1-0 in the set, came back to win the second 7-6 to force a third set, but Spalding held off the late rally by Ramos with a 7-5 victory in the final set to clinch the point and the match.
Belhaven finishes with 19 wins, the most under head coach
Levi Patton. The Blazers finish the 2016 season with a record of 19-5.
