MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Belhaven Men's Tennis team saw its season come to a close on Thursday afternoon, falling 5-0 to Maryville in the quarterfinal round of the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament.
Maryville took control early in doubles play, picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the opening point.
Harshith Anugonda and
Briley Oakes fell at No. 2, while
Stephen Spencer and
Paul Stager dropped the No. 3 match. The No. 1 doubles pairing of
Jesus Diaz and
Josiah Leggett was left unfinished with the point already decided.
In singles, Maryville extended its lead with straight-set wins at the top of the lineup. Anugonda battled at No. 1, while Diaz competed at No. 2, but both matches went in favor of Maryville. Spencer also faced a tough matchup at No. 4 as the Scots moved closer to the team victory.
The match was clinched at No. 6 singles, where Stager fell in straight sets to give Maryville the deciding fifth point. With the result secured, the remaining matches were halted. Leggett was in the middle of a competitive match at No. 3, and Oakes had also begun his third set at No. 5 before both were ruled unfinished due to the clinched score.
