JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's tennis team kicked off their 2015 campaign with a 9-0 sweep of Centenary College (La.). The Blazers have now won four consecutive opening-day matches.
"Our women's team played a good overall match today to open up the season," said head coach
Levi Patton. "We are working a few players around to see what works best and to evaluate."
The Blazers swept all doubles' courts and only gave up a total of six set points.
Belhaven's
AnneMarie Kimball and
Stephanie Smith teamed up to knock off Nicole Martinez and Katelyn Alexander 8-0 in the No. 1 court.
In the No.2 court,
Mary Lichlyter and
Rachel Jefcoat bested Shelby Ferguson and Nicole Martinez 8-0, while Ashley Mclindon and Sarah Kimball defeated G. Zuniga and Celia Soberman 8-0 as well.
In singles, Belhaven's
AnneMarie Kimball swept Katie Cornwall 6-0 after the first set before dropping only one point in the final set to finish 6-1.
Stephanie Smith topped Katelyn Alexander 6-0, 6-4, while
Mary Lichlyter defeated Shelby Ferguson of Centenary 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 court.
The back three courts saw three straight shutout victories for the Blazers. All three final courts were won 6-0, 6-0.
Rachel Jefcoat bested Centenary's Nicole Martinez in the No. 4, Belhaven's
Brittany Keeling topped Celia Soberman in the No. 5, and
SaraCaroline Kimball defeated G. Zuniga in the No. 6 courts and final match of the evening.
The Blazers travel to New Orleans, Louisiana to take on No. 8 Xavier University at noon tomorrow.
